Following half term, there were just under two weeks left for this assignment. I prioritized editing my film over other classes within college due to the deadline but will concentrate on those following that. This week, my aim is to complete one write up each day and I should have time to finish the project. I began Monday with editing work for RGS after a full day of rehearsals on Sunday. Tickets for the show have now gone on sale so I released a promo for that. This is all great experience on the side to build up my portfolio.
On Tuesday, Fahmida surprised us with the prospect of doing presentation from what we’ve accomplished so far in the unit. I threw myself in to go first and it was great to get feedback from the class and Fahmida on the project. The central takeaway I found was that the theming in the film itself was lost. I talked in detail about what the intention was but my messaging with the glasses seemed to only be understood by the class as they were previously aware of my disability. However, for a wider audience who don’t know me personally I could be an issue. Fahmida gave great advice in noting everything I discussed in terms of theming on my website.
Later in the week, I planned on creating a themes page dedicated to this. In the afternoon and evening I finally got round to editing the Level 2 performing arts scenes and have sent them over. This was a fairly straightforward edit as I could multitrack for the close ups in some cases and the rest were wide shots with insert shots. In hindsight, we should’ve simply done two close ups to multitract for every scene. Additionally, I edited a couple of promos from my filming at the RGS concert for a couple of the students.
Next, on Wednesday I managed to get one of my Chazelle film case studies completed, this one on Whiplash looking at an overview of the film, influences and a scene analysis. I aimed to complete these write ups before filming but my short film but my time management fell behind. This is something I need to improve for FMP. I was able to link in one of my YouTube reviews to support this analysis. Although I wrote the paper after filming, I conducted the research previously to make sure my shot was informed.
Additionally, Attila introduced us to director Akira Kurosawa, the master behind features such as Seven Samurai and now someone heavily in my radar. I really appreciate his craft and intend on looking into his work in more detail for my FMP. I got involved in the Rashamon Effect that has blown up my plan for FMP. It may now be too ambitious so I must come up with a more succinct idea, managable in 3 months.
YouTube as always was my Thursday plan with editing spilling into the following day. This time was a Disney Animation ranking that took a long time due to the volume of content. A lesson I need to learn from YouTube is the to adjust my audio quality as my videos can be echoey which loses viewership.
Aside from this, I managed to construct my themes analysis, involving themes Chazelle focuses on, personal themes and wider connections Fahmida said I should look into. It was interesting to look into my disability and discussing my story as I hadn’t really considered it in words rather than just showing in in the film.
Finally, Friday continued the chaos of the week by compiling a bibliography from my research. This is something I should’ve been doing throughout and must learn to do that for FMP. Most of my research came from video essays and interviews as I am more of an audio learner but Attila has encouraged me to look at books to secure a distinction in FMP.
Over the weekend, I completed my second case study, this time on La La Land, following the same process as before as well as improving my website. Obviously, there is a fast quantity of text here in my portfolio and that is quite off putting. I need to learn to reduce this and make papers more structured and concise. However, for now, I restructured the website to include photos and dividers, making it more user friendly as we move into FMP. Next week, I must finalise my third case study on Babylon, construct a technical research paper on LOG format and evaluate the unit before the deadline on Wednesday.
