This week I scheduled to fully begin pre production, as I’ve spent the last couple of weeks tidying my portfolio and researching so now it was time to put that into action. Beginning on Monday, I wrote up my research paper on Damien Chazelle. Due to the sheer level of content I covered in my research, the paper is going to be much longer than expected. However, everything I cover is important and explained as to how it fits into the larger picture. While my research paper elaborates on Chazelle’s career, style and reputation, I still plan on collating separate case studies on Whiplash, La La Land and Babylon from my notes next week. However, I must get a move on with pre production documents fast before production begins lagging behind. On Monday, I also managed to complete three mood boards, summarizing those films and palettes.
Moving on, another Tuesday without Fahminda meant I continued on documents and completed a story synopsis and treatment to hone in on narrative and refine my ideas. I drafted two story treaments, compiling a positives and negatives list to whittle down the plot so I can focus on a concise scene that hits the unit objectives. As well as this, I also began considering the music to base my short film around. Chazelle’s music takes priority in deciding the shot types, tempo and angles of the scene. After looking over many options surrounding clarinet music, I found the perfect piece in Rhapsody in Blue due to it’s title, opening clarinet solo and dreamy atmosphere. As this was a 16 minute piece, I managed to edit the track into a 2.5 minute cut that focuses on the clarinet and pace of my plan.
Although Wednesday is usually a college day, this instead became a second day of filming promos for Marlow Studios, this time at Aylesbury campus. The only major difficulty we had was was that the coach driver was ill so our travel was delayed, causing us to replan the day. As we had the same crew and proposed set up, getting equipment prepared wasn’t too difficult, although transferring between rooms would cost time. Over a two hour period, we conducted 6 interviews for SFX, construction and game design students. There were more planned but interviewees pulled out. As well as getting our multicamera interviews, we gained b-roll footage of classes working to give more variety. Overall, the day was a success and I hope the studio has gained the footage they were after.
Lens Plot.odtConcluding the week after youtube work on Thursday, on Friday it was back to my assignment as well as class work with Attila. We studied Stanley Lumet and Lens Plot. I began work on my script but I was struggling due to my short film having no dialogue. I’ve kept referring to Chazelle’s closing montage scripts for each of his major films to get an idea of format and style. Essentially, the script is a note to self of the type and conent of shots I must include in the montage before I refine these in my story board and shot list. Below is my document studying lens plot and context relating to my short film. Overall, a productive week but I must get a move on if I’m going to complete the assignment to the best of my ability by the deadline in a month.
