This weekend was slightly different to usual as there was no rehearsal to film at. Instead, I used the time to re-film my Adapted Screenplay scene. I’d been in talks with Sienna and Heath for a few weeks and scheduled this Sunday in to do the filming. Our main problem was going to be a limited window of time get all of the shots needed. I’d decided not to stress myself too much by only getting this scene done and not the two surrounding it. I decided to play into the current autumnal season by reshaping my scene to take place in the woods, much like the original text. This solved the lighting issue from the test footage as the actors weren’t staring into the sun and the overall atmosphere was more interesting. The blocking remained the same though it was flipped, due to the location of the car park in reference to the area I wanted to use. The woods we used were the same I’d filmed in the previous week so I knew the landscape and direction of shots I was after. In seeing the footage, the main issue I had was that my shots weren’t as definite and to the shot list as they could’ve been. I instead tended to get carried away with following the dialogue rather than the craft of my vision. This also allowed the acting to slip into the wrong tone. These are all good things I can assess in a full evaluation that I can use to push myself and develop in future.
On Tuesday, Fahmida talked more about universities and finding short courses. For me, I have looked into these and assessed them in my research paper but still don’t feel these route are right for me. I believe for the film industry the best way to progress is to start at a young age as a runner to learn the onset craft. Over time, I can work my way up. If I went to university, I’d still start at the bottom of the food chain. This lesson didn’t feel relevant to me and I felt isolated as someone who wants to go down this path. In the afternoon, we had a careers lesson about driving theory which I’ve already achieved so it was a decent refresher. Attila alerted us to a Careers event called ‘Create your Creative Career’ that will be happening next Tuesday. He didn’t tell us much more about what was going on or the positions we will have in it but I think that experience will aid in my want to work in production, possibly for film. Tuesday evening was another Shrek Rehearsal that I filmed.
On Wednesday, Attila and Nick started looking at the careers event with us, telling us our jobs and what we should aim to do ahead of Tuesday. They have put me down as producer which is a great position for me. I’ve talked to Nick a lot about wanting to do that in future so he is helping me truly realise those skills. Nick gave a team of us the companies that will be presenting at the event so we can research them to find questions worth asking. The companies include EMG, Marlow Studios, Digital Orchard and many more. As well as this, I finished filming and editing a short promotional video for the library’s new E-book system that they had asked the class to do. I put my name forward for it and was the first to get back to them. They were happy with the result and have put it on the college website.
My use of YouTube continued with editing a new video on Thursday. This time, I created a 35 minute Doctor Who ranking due to the arrival of new 60th anniversary episodes in the coming weekends. I wrote the script and filmed on Monday before spending all of Thursday editing. Editing is definitely something I want to keep as a hobby rather than taking on as a full job. There are many aspects of the industry that interest me so keeping production as a day job and then editing in my free time could be a way forward if my YouTube becomes successful. The reception to my videos so far has been great. I’ve had some feedback about the sort of content people want to see from me and adjustments I should make to the sound levels between backing tracks and my voice line.
Friday was a very chaotic day at college. There was a lot going on. Half the class were filming music student videos to put as adverts for the careers event. This footage was given to Josh, me and some of the other class to edit. Josh and I were in the edit suite all day using Final Cut Pro for the first time, a program that the two of us aren’t the biggest fans of, having gotten used to Premiere and Adobe products over the last few years. Josh was also editing the acting students’ show from last week. I took time when there were breaks to continue editing but work on my adapted short film that I filmed at the weekend. This week has been insightful into college productions but I wish we knew a little more about this careers event next week.
