Final week of term was laid back after the assignment was handed in last Friday. On Tuesday, with Fahmida, we continued finishing off people’s presentations on their future plans. Quite a few people said they didn’t want to continue into the film industry or film related universities so we had a discussion with Fahmida as to why that was. Careers was another simple lecture about mental health and wellbeing awareness.
Wednesday was a very similar day. I used my time to look into potential directors for Unit 12 which focuses on director research to help us work on style. My current options I’ve done basic research on are Quentin Tarantino, Chloe Zhao and Damian Chazelle. I believe I will end up with Damian Chazelle as I am already a supporter of his work (La La Land, Whiplash, Babylon, First Man) and think his opinion will lend itself well to identifying shot types and colour palette decisions.
In the afternoon, a team of us worked on the music students’ ‘Pitched’ live TV Event. I am listed as Executive Producer in the credits and my job on the day was managing crew (three camera teams, vision mixer, liaising with music tech sound team and backstage theatre lighting team). This was a great collaboration between departments and I hope we can do more events like this. It’s a great way of building connections and makes me focus on the area I want to go into rather than running everything myself on my own productions. I directed the cameras from the gallery and with Josh as vision mixer by my side we could work the show well. For this, I’d been given the show rundown and cast by the music teacher so this was a different event than usual as I was entirely following someone else’s plans. This is a skill I will have to learn in industry.
Over Thursday and Friday I worked on a review for Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes after I saw it on Monday. As of writing this, it is the highest viewed video on my YouTube and I aim to keep working on this platform over the holidays and throughout the year. Over the Christmas break, I have organised to be a runner on a professional film production for a three day shoot and intend on watching Chazelle’s work and wider watching to make notes that can inform my Unit 12 short film.
