Monday saw the end of my research paper on Damien Chazelle. My main issue with the paper was the length however all of the information covered was important either to bring up as research or state how it was going to assist my project. I still plan on covering aspects of the three major Chazelle films but I must get moving with pre production documents as I’m running out of time for the assignment deadline.
Moving on, Tuesday was a fascinating day spent out at Pinewood Studios. We had a talk from Second Unit/ Action Director and Stunt Man Vic Armstrong, known prominently for his work on Indiana Jones, James Bond and Tom Cruise movies. He talked about practical work on set, how he got into the industry and general advice of networking and taking every job like your last. I asked a couple of questions during the talk. First, I asked about how many takes he would have of a scene maximum. Vic tries to get things done in one or as little as possible and crafts the scene and scheduling to make sure that take with nine cameras is a success. If not, the process becomes even more expensive to reset, especially with explosives and vehicle use. I later asked about where Vic saw the industry going with CGI and visual effects and much like myself he believes film making is losing its magic with practical filmmaking crafts. Saying ‘we’ll fix it in post’ allows for lazier filmmaking and makes films more expensive. There were also questions from others about how Vic feels about actors doing their own stunts and more specific questions about directors and people he has worked with.
In the afternoon, while still at Pinewood, we visited CMS, Creative Media Services, who offer a variety of Level 4 courses in conjunction with Bucks College Group. They offer a new Production Management course that sounded interesting as 2 days a week with an all access to site past. I’ve applied with them as a backup to my BBC application. They were very quick at responding so I’ve got an interview with them next week. The course would set me up well with connections and time in my schedule for part time work.
Continuing back into college on Wednesday, we looked at Light Metering with Attila which I found slightly confusing, especially since cinematography isn’t a direction I’m looking so struggled to maintain interest. However, it was an important topic to cover and Attila want’s us to use our findings in this assignment. Throughout the day, I got working on my shot list, making note of time stamps through the music I’m using where I can cut my montage to fit. Currently, I have 50 shots listed with many more I need to decide on. However, that’s a lot to complete in four weeks to a high standard so I must try and cut this down.
Following a youtube Thursday, Friday in college was taken by filming the performing arts students doing their pieces. We had one group about phone addiction using their phones to light to scenes and the other following animal wellfare. We had a camera crew of 3 sony A7 cameras and Attila using the Kinefinity. This should give us large variety of shots to pull from when editing the pieces. I will try to edit at least one of these soon but the approaching deadline for my assignment comes first. The day was useful to get some hands on camera work and taught me how little I know about my own camera. Luckily Korben has been able to help me and I’m learning although the production documents aspect of the course is what interests me. Finally, good news as I heard back from BBC and managed to get into the 3rd round of applications for their apprenticeship which I will complete on Monday.
