This year started with a straight forward two day week. We’ve now started Unit 12 which focuses on director research and replication of their style. Over the Christmas break, I decided to focus on Damian Chazelle and watch La La Land, Whiplash and Babylon, the three films he’s written and directed, for research and note taking. Over the break, I also did some wider watching of films that cover similar themes and feature similar casts, mainly focusing on Devil Wears Prada to compare with Whiplash and Crazy Stupid Love for La La Land. During the term, I intend on rewatching Babylon as well as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for comparison. As well as these modern films, I need to look at a variety of cultures and periods. Attila has pointed me towards Elevator to the Gallows due to it being a different Jazz based film but from the 1960s in black and white from French New Wave. I must research other international films to compare such as 2022s Past Lives, a Korean film that has a similar dynamic between the characters as La La Land. For this assignment, my plan is to write three film case studies as well as a raw director research paper before progressing to my production documents. The short film I will make will feature a montage on jazz instruments as well as a short story elsewhere to intercut and juxtapose as an intellectual montage.
Aside from the assignment, in terms of videography work and my wider portfolio, this week I’ve finished my initial podcast ‘The Bussing Beacons Broadcast’ from last summer and want to move onto a more topical film-based podcast with classmates to feature. This will widen my presence from just my video essays on youtube. I’m currently waiting on responses for job applications and the BBC apprenticeship, which closes on Monday so I should hear soon.
On Wednesday, we took the time to discuss what we’d been watching over the break and got going towards our projects. This continued on Friday, with Attila setting us a task of finding a book, colour and song that represent our Director and what we want to get out of their style. This week and next I have in my schedule to focus on finishing touches towards last term’s projects so there is no need to go back to them and then my research pages and essays before I draft my production documents. This week, I’ve majorly changed up my website to make it more useful to Fahmida when assessing and I’ve worked on a write up of my first on set experience in film which I did over the christmas holidays. Over this week and the christmas holidays, for my YouTube, I have created 3 new videos: reviews of Doctor Who and Nativity! and this week a mental health awareness video, all linked below.
To end the week, on Friday, I compiled a paper detailing my first experience on a professional film set that I worked on over the christmas break. This gave me a good insight into the industry and the line of work I wish to pursue. I was able to meet with the director a few days later to discuss and build up my network and opportunities through her. Next week, my research and reflection papers will continue, as well as watching as many films as possible.
