Unity, Professionalism, Identity
School Dress Codes are good because they promote unity, professionalism, and identity. If a person is playing for a sports team, it looks more professional for them to wear a uniform because it shows sophistication, and that you respect the organization that you play for. The same thing applies to a school dress code which shows that you not only care about your education, but also that your school is orderly and organized. It shows that you care about your appearance, and that you know how to dress for certain situations.
Better the Learning Environment
A school dress code has also been proven to help kids focus better in the classroom. Instead of focusing on the words on someone’s t-shirt or hat, students can focus on the words on their schoolwork. They won’t get distracted during class by what their friends are wearing. Also, most dress codes are enforced because schools do not want their students to come to school wearing offensive words or symbols. School is a place made for learning, not for overly expressing yourself or trying to outdo your classmates in how flashy your clothes can be.
Prevents students from expressing themselves
School dress codes are bad for several reasons as well. It prevents students from expressing themselves. A child’s main form of expression is the clothing he or she chooses to wear. Through clothing you can determine a person's culture, hobbies, concerns and more. If all students were required to wear uniforms or even restricted from wearing clothes that express certain ideas, then how are they supposed to practice expressing themselves individually? In society, Teens and children struggle with self confidence. By directing and redirecting what a student is allowed to wear diminishes majority of confidence in a person.
The Real Distraction
School Dress code violations are viewed as distracting others from learning. It is found that teachers and administrators are constantly reminding students what they can and cannot wear. This has become the real disturbance. Students are constantly being asked to change and leave class because a small part of their body is showing or distracting others when half the time, it is distracting no one. Complaints have been made that girls are being punished for the behavior of boys.
