Since the early 2000s, Scotland has been one of the most notorious heavy alcohol consuming countries in the world. 1 in 4 people drink at hazardous or harmful levels (defined as drinking more than 14 units per week). All these people put themselves at risk of death everyday. Alcohol-linked deaths in Scotland are 54% higher than England and Wales. Scotland cannot control their alcohol habits and do not seem to really care for their bodies. If the Scottish people do not check their alcohol consumption, they will continue to have high alcohol death rates.
The government has now place laws on the prices of alcoholic beverages to prevent the overuse of the addiction. The Scottish government created a law that establishes a 70 dollar per unit alcohol minimum price. This law eliminates any cheap alcohol for citizens to buy with spare change. The government also banned any happy hour promotions for alcohol. This banning of promotion discourages people from drinking a lot of alcohol at one time. The Scottish government is getting their people’s act together with these new laws.
