In this podcast, I plan on discussing food waste in our society and its many effects. Food waste is food that is discarded or lost that is uneaten. Many restaurants tend to throw away extra food that is not eaten during that day. While this seems reasonable at first glance, this food could be put to good use by feeding people who may be hungry. The problem is further stretched when the same restaurant uses more food and resources to be eaten the next day.
Each day, roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year, approximately 1.3 billion tons, gets lost or wasted. Despite this, approximately 1 in 7 people in the world do not receive enough food to have a healthy life. Because of this, groups such as the Mercy Corps are taking steps to ending this worldwide issue such as connecting farmers to people and resources they need to increase production and helping communities develop plans and skills to sustainably manage their resources. While these are undoubtedly steps in the right direction, more progress has to be made.
