I wanted to thank everyone for your condolences in my mother's passing. Your cards, calls, e-mails, thoughts, and prayers meant so very much during

this time. My mama was a little Southern lady -- kind, fair, honest, smart, generous, hospitable. She loved God, family, friends, little children, books, reading, writing poetry. She was not a complicated person and the simplest of pleasures made her happy. She never learned to drive. She loved ice cream. She liked shopping for little doodads. She loved us five little Powers (and eventually six more, with the grandchildren) with an unbelievable love and she loved all the people we ever brought home to her. She would have loved you, my friends. Thank you all again.

Whenever you eat, whether as part of a festivity or because you are feeling sad or it's just time for lunch, take a few moments to sit and watch your breath. Just breathe. This will bring you into the present moment where you can then have a full experience of your food. Seeing and smelling and feeling your food is also very nourishing!

What struck me first when reading this was something I often say to the kids in my classes. We are already whole, already perfect. We've been raised in a society that teaches us to strive for more, better, next. But right now is all we have, and it is just what it is. We can strive AND it's important to remember that what we need is already who we are, it's already a part of us. So when you say not "there", I say you are "here"! ;-)

Once you step off your mat after class, try to bring that Yogic attitude with you and draw upon it as you go through your day. No need to get anxious if the traffic isn't moving as quickly as you like, or you are put on hold too long while on the phone...use that time to reflect on the "good stuff". Times like this, the rubber of the Yoga mat meets the rubber of the road of life.

Progress is not linear. We don’t go from here to there and put things behind us. Progress is a spiral staircase and we just keep coming around to the same issues again and again. But every time we face the same demons: we do so with a higher consciousness and stronger muscles and heart from the climb. So we do a little better each go ’round.

Here’s what’s gonna happen: I’m just gonna keep showing up all jacked up. Some years I’ll look too skinny and some years I’ll be a little bigger and sometimes I’ll look exhausted and depleted and sometimes I’ll look AMAZING. Who freaking knows. I can’t let what I look like keep me from showing up. I’m never going to have it all figured out. I’m showing up anyway. Because: look what happens when jacked up, nervous, imperfect people show up anyway: MAGIC HAPPENS.

First of all, it is hard to deal with people who are not open to things outside of their experience. However, when people ask me I usually respond that yoga has no specific dogma and it makes no claims about salvation. The ultimate goal of the eight limbs is samadhi which is unbroken communion with the object of contemplation but nowhere does it identify the object. That's why I think it is a great spiritual discipline. As far as gods I often use them in class because they demonstrate certain desirable traits and lessons. Ironically no one complains when we use Greco/Roman mythology. I hope this helps, but we are in South Carolina and there is a lot of fear and anxiety. ~Pastor Doug, 3/23/16

For me, when I talk about yoga, there's all kinds of tools we can use when talking to God. We can use a rosary, dancing, a labyrinth. Some people pray when they run. Praying during yoga, which is designed for meditation, is just perfect in my book. It's what I do. Similarly, any medium can be used for evil as well. But to categorically say yoga is not Christian would be a sad thing, indeed. ~Pastor Gary, 3/16/16

Sometimes I feel as though I need to remind y'all of this: The yoga pose is not the goal. Becoming flexible is not the goal. Standing on your hands or getting into a challenging asana is not the goal.

The goal is to create space where you were once stuck. To peel back the layers of protection that you have built around your heart. To appreciate your body and become aware of the mind and that noise, Monkey Chatter, that it creates. To make peace with who you are. The goal is to love your "self."

Please join me on the mat to FEEL, not to accomplish. Shift your focus and your heart will grow.

1. There are many different body shapes that are all healthy. When you assess shapes --different bodies have different proportions of muscle mass, soft tissue mass, and bony alignment. There is no “one” or “best”—rather many different varieties of bodies

How you know you're NOT in the "right room" . . . Yes, D'Etta, these are such good tools for working with kids--and even have their place with adults as I can imagine some grownups really enjoying the playfulness of the language. That being said, as we are not able to work with minors in clinic, you will want to push beyond your edge of comfort and explore these ideas and practices in a more traditionally adult fashion.

Thankfully “Traditionally adult” is not you! Your playfulness and ability to connect and think outside of the box are wonderful strengths!
