Hats off to PHES school counselor

When students arrive at Pleasant Hill Elementary, they are in for a treat. Guidance Counselor D’Etta Broam welcomes them each morning with a cheerful smile, an enthusiastic greeting and a crazy hat.

Broam, the kindergarten and first-grade school counselor at PHES, has worn many hats in public education over the years as a second-grade teacher, a gifted and talented teacher, and a media specialist. Throughout her career, she has used humor and props to teach students.

When asked why she dresses up and wears hats every morning, Broam says, “When parents drop their children off in the morning, I think the hats and greetings crack them up. They feel welcome and it starts their day with a smile, and that is enough reason for me. I want them to know that someone cares that they are here.”
