Magee Secondary School SPARTS Program
The SPARTS program was introduced at Magee in 1985 to offer an educational program to students competing in “High Performance Athletics” at the provincial, national or international levels, and students performing in an area of the “Arts” at an extremely high level of excellence. The SPARTS program offers students in grades 8 through 12 the opportunity to complete their academic requirements at Magee in preparation for secondary school graduation and post-secondary entrance, while allowing them to maintain their rigorous training and competition schedule outside of school. Magee’s SPARTS program is open to “high performance” artistic or athletic performers who are seriously committed to their education, training and competition.
Academic:
Applicants to the SPARTS program must have completed grade 7 and have maintained a “B” average, with no failing marks or unsatisfactory behaviour or work habits, in the year prior to applying for entrance to the program.
Sport / Art Qualification:
Applicants must be involved in the activities of a recognized sport / art governing body at a “high performance” or “excellence program” level. For athletes, this means involvement at the provincial, national or international level; club athletics will not be accepted. For musicians, applicants must have completed RCM Grade 10 level, be minimally working toward their ARCT, and be involved in serious public performance. Other “arts” or artistic performance studies are also considered.**
The activity must be one for which training is year-round, and requires a modified school schedule to accommodate training / competition demands. All applicants must be under the supervision and training of a recognized and qualified provincial / national *coach or *instructor for a minimum of 25 hours per week, excluding competitions. The *coach/*instructor must sign to validate these hours.
Admission:
Once accepted, participants are enrolled in the SPARTS program for one year, with the expectation that, provided academic requirements and training are maintained, participants will continue through to graduation. Participation of each student will be reviewed annually to ensure continued suitability for the program. **Participants are expected to sign and abide by the terms of a contract that outlines academic, behavioural, educational training and competition objectives. Parents, coaches / instructors, representatives of affiliated governing bodies and the Magee Secondary SPARTS Coordinator will also sign the contract.
Application Process:
Students who meet the above criteria and who are interested in applying for placement into Magee’s SPARTS program are asked to complete the application form and include all documents outlined on that form. Completed packages must be received at Magee by March 1st, 2012 for admission in September 2012.
Application packages and timeline information are available at Magee, beginning on November 07, 2011. Completed SPARTS applications will be accepted at Magee, January 3, 2012 through March 1, 2012 (4:00 PM), inclusive. These applications should be completed in all respects, including letters of reference and validated training schedules, et cetera. Students will be notified by April 6, 2012, at which time, candidates selected for the program will be asked to come into the school for an interview and timetable consultation and an opportunity to complete school transfer forms. Specific concerns or questions should be addressed to Mr. N. Akrap, Vice-Principal, at Magee.
School Expectations
Participants will provide the SPARTS coordinator with a yearly schedule of training, performance or competition. This will be copied for subject teachers.
Students are expected to complete all assignments in order to receive credit for their courses.
When students must miss school for pre-arranged competitions or performances, students are required to fill out a SPARTS absence form and have it signed by all teachers. Students are responsible for completing all missed work, and discussing appropriate timelines/due dates with teachers.
