PART A: CLIENTS
English Language Learners are students whose ability in Standard English inhibits their progress in
the English speaking school system. The program helps them to become proficient in listening,speaking, reading and writing English so they can better function in regular academic classes.Canadian cultural integration is also emphasized as preparation for integration into grade 8-12
courses.
. PART B: ENTRANCE PROCEDURES
When a student arrives at NWSS, assessment in English skills is part of the registration. If the student’s schooling has been in a non-English speaking country or school or if the student was last registered in an English language program, the student will be assessed in the following manner:
· An oral interview
· An impromptu 15 minute writing sample
· A mathematics assessment and challenge exam
· A standardized English proficiency test (CELT or SLEP)
. PART C: PLACEMENT IN LEVELS
From the results of this initial assessment, students’ English and Math levels will be identified.
Level 1 students speak and/or understand little English. Although they may know some words in
English, they are unable to construct sentences to express their thoughts.
. They will have a choice of the following electives in addition to ESL courses:
. PE
. Choir
. Art
. Drama
. Guitar
. Keyboarding
. Canadiana
. Math (dependent upon Math assessment)
Level 2 students speak and/or understand some English. They can construct sentences, but must
be conscious of the processes to do so; their control of structure is inadequate and their vocabulary
understanding is minimal.
. They will have a choice of the following courses in addition to level 1courses listed above:. Technical Ed (Metalwork, Woodwork, Drafting)
. Fine Arts (Photography, Video Graphics and Animation, Music, Dance,Music Composition)
Level 2.5 students speak and understand most English, but still have difficulty with assignments in
English. They can largely construct sentences to express their own ideas and needs, but their
control of structure and vocabulary is limited.
. They will have a choice of the following courses as well as level 1and 2 courses listed above:
. Business Ed (Accounting, Business Computer Applications, Information Technology, Business Communications)
. Home Economics (Foods, Culinary Arts, Textiles)
Level 3 students speak and understand English, but may still have some difficulty with assignments in English. They can construct sentences to express their own ideas and needs, but their control of structure and vocabulary is still developing.
. They will have a choice of the following courses as well as level 1, 2 and 2.5 courses listed above:
. Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, and Science Technology)
. Business Ed (Law, Business Finance, Economics, Marketing Entrepreneurship, Computer Information Systems, Business Computer Applications)
. Technical Ed (Design/Tech, Auto, Carpentry and Joinery, Drafting and Design, Metal Fabrication and Machining, Electronics)
. Home Economics (Cafeteria, Tourism, Family Studies, Human Services)
. Planning 10
. Transitional Social Studies (IDS), with ESL team recommendation. Leads to SS11
. Learning Strategies(ELS)
. Leads to English Dynamics 10 and Communications 11
Transitional Level 3.5+: students speak and understand English but may have difficulty in some academic classes. This difficulty is related at least in part to the students having a primary language other than English, although some of these students may now be English dominant.
. They will have a choice of the following courses as well as level 1, 2, 2.5 and 3 courses listed above:
. Social Studies 8 – 9 (age appropriate with ESL team recommendation)
. English 8 – 9 (age appropriate with ESL team recommendation)
. English Language Development (ELD)
. Leads to English 10
. PART D: EXIT CRITERIA
Students are assessed once per term using the school-wide reads and writes. There is a mastery
list for each class. Once a student has completed the majority of competencies on the list, they will
transition on to the next class.
