Incentive Program
Palmer’s Incentive Program provides a challenging course of study for students with strong ability and motivation. Students cover the core curriculum and explore enrichment topics that vary according to subject and grade level. Critical and creative thinking skills, field studies, topic acceleration, group presentation, independent research, and study in areas of special interest are all integral parts of the program.
The Incentive Program is a cross-grade, crosscurricular program designed to challenge motivated students to reach their full potential. A wide variety of interests are embraced, including physical activities, outdoor education, and community service – all designed to advance the physical and mental well-being of our students. Specifically, the aims of the Incentive Program are to encourage and stimulate the following in students: self-reliance and self-discipline; perseverance and determination; initiative and creativity; social responsibility; the spirit of adventure; and fitness of body and mind. Students in the Incentive Program enrol in English, Social Studies, Mathematics and Science in grades 8 to 10. In Mathematics, students are engaged in an accelerated program and will complete Math 8 to 10 in two years (grade 8 and 9), giving them the opportunity to take Enriched Math 11 in their grade 10 year. In grades 11 and 12, students have the opportunity to continue enrichment by enrolling in Honours and Advanced Placement courses. Application Process Students apply in writing for admission to the Incentive Program, using forms available from the counselling office or the Incentive/Advanced Placement Program facilitator. Acceptance is based on the student’s demonstrated academic ability, motivation, task commitment, and parent and teacher recommendations. To remain in the program, the student is expected to exhibit good citizenship and maintain an academic standing of B or above and participate in the extra-curricular activities of the Incentive Program that include Camp Squamish, Camp Strathcona, Destination Imagination, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program. Many of the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program may be accomplished through student participation in Incentive Program activities. Students are able to receive external school credit at the Grade 10 level for the Bronze Award, 2 credits at the Grade 11 level for the Silver Award, and 2 credits at the Grade 12 level for the Gold Award.
Note: Students can apply to the Incentive Program in grades 9, 10 and 11, as each year there are a few openings availle. Interested students are asked to see their counsellor for application forms.
