General
The Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (CCO) is an annual event that aims to promote interest in chemistry amongst high school students. Participation in the Canadian Finals or an International Olympiad is a tremendous experience and a unique opportunity to travel and meet fellow students from around the world who have similar interests. Our 2011 team won 1 gold medal and 3 silver medals at the 43rd IChO in Ankara, Turkey. The next International Chemistry Olympiad will take place in Washington DC, USA, in the summer of 2012. Since 2010, the CCO has received administrative support from the Chemical Institute of Canada, to bolster the academic program organized by volunteers primarily based at the University of Toronto.
The aim of this web site is to provide general information about the chemistry program to students and teachers, and provide an on-line training program to Canadian students who are interested in participating at both the national and international levels. Note that there are Olympiads in other subjects also; these are separate competitions, and while students may participate any of them, it is generally advisable to focus their efforts on only one.
Getting Involved:
Any student under twenty years of age in July, and who has spent at least two years in a Canadian school, may participate in the Canadian Chemistry Olympiad. This includes most grade 11 and 12 students, as well as CEGEP students in Quebec. Students should:
Talk to their chemistry teacher about participating in the program
Register for the national on-line training program in September
Attempt the on-line training program problem sets & take-home exam
Write the Canadian Chemistry Competition (Part A) & Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (Part C) exams in April. (Registration information for both exams is sent to all chemistry teachers in the new year.)
Canadian National Selection Camp:
Based on their exam results, the top 10-15 students from across the country will be invited to the week-long national selection camp, which takes place in late May or early June. The organizers will cover travel costs to and from the Camp and the cost of the stay. The Camp will end with the National Olympiad final examination, and the top four students will represent Canada at the international competition in July. These four will compete with other students from over 65 nations for gold, silver and bronze medals.
Eligibility And Costs:
To be eligible for selection to the Canadian National Olympiad finals, students must be under twenty years of age in July, must have spent at least two years in Canadian schools, and cannot have taken any chemistry courses for credit at university level. For travel purposes students should have valid passports. The Canadian Chemistry Olympiad Organization will provide students with air tickets.
