prerequisite English 11 or Humanities 11 recommendation
This course is highly recommended for students who wish to continue their education in one of the major universities and who will be taking further English courses at the post-secondary level.
Anyone interested in English Literature is encouraged to enrol. Students are prepared for the AP exam which will allow them to skip first year English at the post-secondary level. Course content Literary works are “thought experiments” that speak to the human condition. What does it mean to be human? Authors through the centuries have attempted to communicate tentative answers and this course is a survey of some of the foundational writers of the English literary tradition (from Beowulf to Margaret Atwood). The
course will deepen your understanding and appreciation of the ideas and writings that have shaped our contemporary, democratic world. The student will be prepared for an optional Provincial Exam (scholarships) and an optional Advanced Placement exam. The successful A.P. student can, for most university programs in North America, skip first year English. If preferred, the student can opt out of either exam and simply aim for English Literature 12 credits.Assignments and activities The major text in this course is Literature: The British Tradition.Assignments and activities include tests and quizzes, essays, short paragraphs, memory and work notes.
