King George Secondary, Lord Roberts Elementary and Elsie Roy Elementary Schools are a Family of Schools within the Vancouver School Board offering the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) for all grade 6 to 10 students.
At the forefront of the IB MYP are five Areas of Interaction. These are not separate subjects, but rather themes, which are embedded into each of the subject disciplines. These themes include:
1. Approaches to Learning (learning how to learn, how to turn information into knowledge)
2. Health and Social Education (preparation for a mentally and physically healthy life)
3. Environment (investigating and suggesting possible solutions for environmental issues of today)
4. Community and Service (volunteerism, providing opportunities for students to contribute to the well-being of society, thereby developing responsible citizenship)
5. Human Ingenuity (“Man the Maker:” the creative and inventive genius of people)
One of the goals of the IB MYP is to help students learn to view anything that they may meet in the world through several sets of lenses . . . from different perspectives. Incorporating the Areas of Interaction into each of the subject disciplines is one way of doing this.
The Personal Project is a major activity for students who choose to complete the final year (Year 5 = Grade 10) of the program. The project is intended to be the culmination of the student’s involvement in the MYP. The Personal Project may be presented in a variety of formats, such as an essay, a piece of art, or a drama or film presentation. The choice of the topic for the project is made in consultation with a Year 5 teacher who has the responsibility for supervising the development of the project according to the International Baccalaureate Organization guidelines.
Above all, our goal is that students acquire a genuine love of learning and disciplined habits of mind and body that will guide their adulthood, allow them to contribute meaningfully to society, and be a source of strength and enjoyment throughout the whole of their lives.
