Psychology 12
This course, in which graduating students are given priority, is a first year university level psychology course. As such, the topics, tests and assignments covered will be similar in scope and treatment to
those found in university survey courses. It is strongly suggested that candidates be able to set aside adequate time for readings before the class lectures so as to enhance comprehension of the course
content. Upon successful writing of the national AP exam which is administered in May, and which entails that an examination fee be paid, students will be given credit for an introductory psychology course at most universities and colleges.
Computer Science
Pre‐requisite: Information & Communications Technology 11
Recommendation: 86% in Math 11
This is a university level option open to students who have demonstrated strong skills and knowledge in programming (Java). Upon successful completion of the AP exam in May, students can gain credit for first year university computer science at universities throughout the world.Topics include programming analysis, Java library classes, standard algorithms,object‐oriented programming, case studies, and data structures. The AP Computer Science examination requires payment of a fee which students are responsible for.
English Literature
Prerequisite: English 11 (taken for one full year at an accredited school) with an 80% average or better
This course is designed for students who are dedicated to English studies and who wish to advance their skills in interpreting and writing about literature through intense, focused study. The course will involve the study of novels, poetry and short stories with emphasis on close reading and discussion. A summer
reading list will be issued with an assignment which will be due at the beginning of the school year. Students may wish to read additional course material, as the reading list for this course is quite heavy. Classes will often be modeled on the seminar format, with expectation that students do reading and
research outside of school time in order to maximize time spent in class groups. Admission to the course will be subject to teacher recommendations, evidence of dedication to English and good work habits. The aim of the course is that all participants in this class will be prepared for the Advanced Placement Exam in May.
Calculus
Prerequisite: Principles of Mathematics 11 with an 80% average or better
This course is designed for students who plan to pursue studies in advanced mathematics and/or science at a post secondary institution.To enrol a student must be taking Principles of Mathematics 12 and Calculus concurrently or have completed Principles of Mathematics 12.All students must have completed Principles of Mathematics 11 with a mark of 80% or more.Admission to the course will be subject to teacher recommendation and to needs of the student for particular universities. Since the course will cover topics found in the first term of a university calculus course, students must be prepared to set aside additional time for assignments and study. Students earning above average marks in this course may hoose to write the Advanced Placement Exam in May.
Biology
Pre or Co‐requisite: Students will take this course after successful completion or in conjunction with both Biology 11 and Biology 12.
AP Biology is an equivalent course to a college introductory biology course taken by biology majors in their first year. This course aims to provide students with the conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and analytical skills necessary to deal critically with the rapidly changing science of biology. The course covers
three general areas: molecules and cells;heredity and evolution; and organisms and populations. Students may take the optional AP Biology exam in the spring at a cost of approximately $60.
Chemistry
Pre or Co‐requisite: Students must have taken, or be taking, Chemistry 12 in addition to AP Chemistry.
Advanced Chemistry explores topics in greater detail than the regular grade 11 and 12 courses. Explorations will occur through lecture, demonstration, problem solving and laboratory experiences.Participation in Chemistry competitions will be encouraged. Students should have attained a high “B” standing in Chemistry 11 (an 80% average is recommended). This course prepares students to write the optional AP Chemistry examination that allows high scoring students to receive credit for first
year university chemistry. An examination fee is required.
Physics
Pre or Co‐requisite: Students must have taken or be taking Physics 12 in addition to AP Physics. AP Physics 12 explores physics topics in greater detail than the regular Physics 12 course. Explorations
occur through lecture, demonstration,problem solving and laboratory experiences. It is recommended that
students interested in applying should have attained a high “B” standing in Physics 11 (a minimum 80% average.)
This course prepares students to write the optional AP Physics examination that allows high scoring students to receive credit for first year university chemistry.An examination fee is required.
