This program at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary is for students who have demonstrated excellence, have a positive attitude toward learning, are highly motivated and reliable, are curious, critical, creative thinkers, participate in diverse activities, are interested in leadership skills, work well with others, and are open to learning in new ways and places.
Students currently in grade 7 may apply to Synergy, an academically demanding program that takes place within the Churchill premises. The program is designed to be a sequel to gifted, talented, and M.A.C.C. programs offered at elementary schools. Motivated, dedicated, and curious students are prime candidates for the Synergy Program. It is a two-year course of study that spans grade 8 and 9, and enrols 30 students at each grade level.
Students with broad interests and high ability will pursue studies in an integrated manner following a challenging curriculum. The emphasis is on creative and critical thinking within the context of the curricular framework. Students will extend learning beyond the classroom through field studies, community service, and extra-curricular activity. They will learn to work with others, developing teamwork, leadership, and cooperation skills, modeled through the Seven Habits of Highly Successful Teens-- a program designed to move students from dependence, to independence, to inter-dependence.
The Synergy Program is comprised of thematically linked studies in Applied Skills, English, Science, and Social Studies. Students will receive regular credits for courses they complete successfully. In addition on alternate days students will take four other courses in the regular grade 8 program: A foreign language, math, P.E., and fine arts or music. Participation in the Synergy Program requires students to maintain a C+ average, a positive attitude towards learning, and good classroom behaviour.
Most students from the grade 8 year will continue to the grade nine level, however continuation is not guaranteed. Many who successfully complete the Synergy program continue on in enriched areas of study. For more information http://churchill.vsb.bc.ca/eolson
