ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (ELL)
The purpose of this program is to enable students whose first language is not English to learn oral and written English so that they can more fully participate in the regular school program and to help students adapt to and function more successfully in the culture of the school and the community. Selection into the program is based on assessment results and/or teacher reports indicating which placement would be appropriate. Each student, after being assessed, is assigned to a Starting, Emerging I, Emerging II, Developing ELL, of BA Writing 10/11 class. Students are enrolled in both ELL classes and regular classes depending on their proficiency in English.
1. ELL Starting class is for students with very little or no proficiency in English. Students will spend up to one-half of their time in ELL classes, and they will be integrated into regular classes for at least four or five of their eight blocks. This program teaches the basic skills of reading, writing, listening, and, in particular, speaking.
2. ELL Emerging I is for students with some proficiency in English. Students will spend up to one-half of their time in an ELL class, and they will be integrated into regular classes for four of their eight blocks. This program teaches the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
3. ELL Emerging II is designed to improve upon the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills developed in ELL Emerging I and is more tailored to meet the individual needs of the student. The student will spend from one to two blocks in an ELL class and will be integrated into six or seven regular classes.
4. ELL Developing adds further improvement to their reading and writing skills to prepare them for mainstream English classes. The students at this level have oral language skills that allow them to communicate on an every day basis. The students will spend usually only one block at this level.
5. B.A. Writing 10 is for students at the developing level of English who need focused practice and instruction in sentence structure and basic composition. Students will work with a wide range of materials designed to help them prepare for the demands of the English 9 and 10 curriculums. This is a 4 credit course.
6. B.A. Writing 11 is for students at the developing level of English acquisition who have had previous instruction in sentence structure and basic composition and who are ready to learn the specific skills necessary for successful academic writing. The primary goal of the course is to enable ELL students to develop their writing skills so that they can more fully participate and succeed in the regular academic programme and thus meet Graduation Program goals. This is a 4 credit course and will help students prepare for the demands of the English 10 and 11 curriculums.
7. Students at the Expanding and Bridging levels of English acquisition will not be in direct ELL classes, but they will be monitored and have access to specialized support from the ELL teachers.
