INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a rigorous pre-university course of studies, leading
to examinations, that meet the needs of highly motivated secondary school students between the ages of 16
and 19 years. Designed as a comprehensive two-year curriculum that allows its graduates to fulfill
requirements of various national education systems, the diploma model is based on the pattern of no single
country but incorporates the best elements of several. The IB graduation diploma is recognized worldwide
and successfully completed courses may earn university credit.
HONOURS PROGRAMME (NWSS PRE-IB)
In order to prepare students for the IB Programme, NWSS offers Honours courses to eligible students in
grades 9 and 10. It is expected that during this two year period regular coursework for grades 9, 10 and 11
will be completed. Student selection is done in May of the grade 8 year and is based upon:
a) standardized testing in Reading, Mathematics and Science
b) testing in problem solving, critical thinking and French
c) a writing sample
d) two teacher referrals
Honours courses are taken as a package and consist of the following six courses:

IB DIPLOMA PROGRAMME
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme consists of six subject groups and students are
required to select one subject from each group. Some subjects are taken at the Higher Level (240 hours)
and some at the Standard Level (150 hours). Distribution requirements ensure that the science-oriented
student is challenged to learn a foreign language and that the natural linguist becomes familiar with
laboratory procedures. While overall balance is maintained, flexibility in choosing higher level
concentrations allows the student to pursue areas of personal interest and to meet special requirements for
university entrance.
Student selection for this programme is done in May of the grade 10 year and is based upon:
a) testing in Reading, Mathematics and Science
b) a test of critical thinking
c) teacher referrals - OR -
d) successful completion of the NWSS Pre-IB Programme

The diploma is displayed in the shape of a hexagon with six academic areas surrounding the core. Subjects are studied concurrently and students are exposed to the two great traditions of learning: the Humanities and the Sciences.
