Secondary E.S.L. classes provide students whose primary language is not English with opportunities to achieve their full academic potential. E.S.L. teachers assist students in developing fluency in English appropriate to their age and ability.
Students develop the concepts and language skills required to succeed in science, social studies and English courses. A further goal is to assist students in adjusting to Canadian culture while maintaining their own cultural identity and selfesteem.
English Language Development 8 and 9: Levels 1 & 2
Course Content: This course has been developed for students with little or no exposure to the English language.Students will spend up to 4 blocks in E.S.L. classes, and the remainder of their timetable integrated into regular classes, at their grade level where possible. Students will be assisted in developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The course focuses on vocabulary development, the accompanying grammar structures, speaking and listening skills, as well as reading strategies and writing mechanics.
E.S.L. Literature Study 8 and 9: Levels 3 & 4
Course Content: This course is designed to prepare students for ESL Writing and Transitional classes, by improving upon skills developed in Levels 1 and 2; listening, speaking, reading and writing. (With special permission of the teacher, students may be able to take this course in conjunction with Transitional classes). Completing this course prepares students for success in Science and Transitional and/or regular English and Socials classes in the following years. Students at this level may spend up to three blocks in ESL. Activities include oral presentations, discussions, interviews, listening activities, writing, reading activities, cultural field trips, co-operative learning.
E.S.L. Composition Grades 8 and 9
Course Content: The focus of this course is to supplement junior English courses by offering more opportunity for students to improve their vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, paragraphing, and creative writing skills. The focus will be on recognizing and correcting those weaknesses in writing in English, which are generated by the students' first language. Marks will include written work, tests, and speaking English in class.
E.S.L. Composition 10
Course Content: The focus of this course is to help senior students improve their writing skills by stressing vocabulary growth, creative thinking, correct and appropriate sentence structure, and proper paragraphing. Those grammar errors common to E.S.L. students will receive focus. A portion of this course will be dedicated to those writing tasks tested on the Grade 10 provincial English exam. Assessment techniques used: observation, conferencing, student reflective selfevaluation, testing, and written work.Prerequisite: Level 3 and up.
English Language Development 10: Levels 1 and 2
This course is designed to introduce ESL students, who have very limited English and are unable to be successfully integrated in all the academic classes, to four main English language skills: reading writing, listening, and speaking. The course focuses on developing the strategies and thinking skills needed to read, write, and discuss information extracted from texts. The materials and content are designed to mirror and elicit the learning outcomes of the academic as well as emphasize Canadian culture and customs. Emphasis at this level is on:
• Developing basic spoken and written vocabulary
• Reading and writing simple and compound sentences
• Using the present, simple past and future verb tenses
• Communicating in legible handwriting
• Giving oral presentations
• Working individually and in groups
E.S.L. Literature Study 10: Levels 3 and 4
Course Content: This E.S.L. Course compliments the Basic English course and will enable all non-native speakers of English to develop their potential to the fullest extent. The course focuses on developing strategies needed to read, research and write successfully in English and addresses specific needs in language and culture. The language component consists of the four main communicating skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Special focus will be placed upon identifying elements of Canadian culture and celebrating Canadian culture. Emphasis at this level will be on:
• basic vocabulary, pronunciation and language structures,
• understanding and responding to personal questions and spoken narratives,
• understanding and responding to basic instructions and commands,
• understanding and responding to simple written text,
• developing basic writing skills,
• identify elements of their own and classmates’ culture and special days, and
• identify elements of Canadian culture and special days.
English Language Development 11 and 12: Levels 1 and 2
Course Content: This course is designed for those whose primary language is not English and who need language support so that they may access the B.C. curriculum. The goal is to extend and enhance proficiency in the four main English language skills: speaking, reading, listening and writing. As well students will continue to describe and analyze Canadian culture and customs using more complex vocabulary and sentence structures. Students will apply and convey information for particular purposes and audiences. Emphasis at this level is on:
• Using everyday vocabulary with ease
• Reading, discussing, and writing about literature
• Developing a more sophisticated vocabulary and reading decoding skills
• Recognizing and applying cultural context to language and literature
• Giving oral presentation
• Working individually and in groups
E.S.L. Literature Study 11 and 12: Levels 3 and 4
Course Content: This E.S.L. Course compliments the Basic English course and will enable all non-native speakers of English to develop their potential to the fullest extent. The course focuses on developing strategies needed to read, research and write successfully in English and addresses specific needs in language and culture. The language component consists of the four main communicating skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Special focus will be placed upon identifying elements of Canadian culture and celebrating Canadian culture. Emphasis at this level will be on:
• using spoken English for a variety of functional and academic purposes,
• reading a variety of materials for specific purposes,
• developing writing skills such as: creative writing, genre writing, paraphrasing and precise writing, applying the writing process including peer editing,
• developing a range of language and critical thinking strategies to help understand information, negotiate meaning and cope more effectively in oral and written communication,
• identify similarities and differences between cultures (theirs and others),
• identify cultural content in a variety of oral and written resources.
E.S.L. Composition 11 and 12
Course Content: This E.S.L. Composition Course compliments the basic English course and will enable all students,regardless of their language and cultural background to develop their potential to the fullest extent. Instruction will focus on improving student’s speaking and listening ability, increasing their understanding and enjoyment of reading material and to write clear, standard English. Students will be taught strategies to read and understand a variety of written materials, to express themselves in different formats of writing, to perform a variety of communicative tasks ranging from asking for information to expressing an opinion and to participate in class discussions. Emphasis at this level will be on:
• using the Writing Process,
• writing effective sentences, paragraphs, essays and compositions,
• understanding and applying standard grammar in a variety of genres,
• developing speaking and listening skills,
• developing reading skills as well as an appreciation of literature, and
• developing effective study skills.
