Trying to fit their match in between raindrops on the holiday weekend, the teams of Elaine Twyman/Lisa Vines and Betty Gilliland/Sue Jacobson managed to get on Kingswood on the afternoon of Monday, July 3rd. They survived the heat and humidity and played an outstanding match ... and they also had to overcome the fact that it was carts on path!?!
The match went back and forth on the front side until things wound up all square through 10. From 10 through 17, the competitors would make putt after crucial putt to remain square. If you were the last person putting, then you were putting to tie the hole ... hole after hole! And the player usually putting last was Lisa Vines ... sinking putt after putt to tie holes!!! As a matter of fact, Lisa had her lowest score ever shooting a great 81! But it all came down to the 18th on the putting green yet again. Elaine putted first and yet again burned the edge of the hole. She never had a putt drop all day but burned several edges! Betty and Sue were next and decided Betty was ready so she went ahead and putted next. It was a 15 to 20 foot sidehill, downhill putt. Let's just say that if it had not gone in the hole, it probably would have rolled all the way off the green! But it banged into the back of the cup and dropped for a par with a stroke. Now it was up to Lisa ... putting last yet again ... and a putt to determine the outcome of the match. It was the only putt she missed all day long ... and probably the hardest putt she had to make all day long. Gilliland and Jacobson pulled out yet another win on the 18th.
Bottom line ... when Betty Gilliland says she does not want to go extra holes, she means it and will back it up with her play!!!
