News concerning the 2017 WGC Match Play Tournament.

Congratulations to Wanda Barton and Linda Roberts - 2017 Match Play Madness Champions
Winners 3 & 2 over  Judy Hudson and Myrlene Zimmerman

Barton/Roberts squared off against Hudson/Zimmerman today for the title of Match Play Madness Champions. They started on Hole 1 at BVCC, on a hot, muggy day. They were happy to have a small gallery follow the match.

Linda scored par on #1 to win the hole, but Judy made par on #2 to square the match. Hole #3 tied, and Wanda made par on #4 to back to 1 up. Linda birdied #5, to win hole and go 2 up. Wanda made net 4 on next hole to go 3 up. However, Judy and Myrlene came back to win #7, followed by a win on #8. Wanda won #10 with par. Wanda and Linda both birdied #11, to tie the hole. (Lots of 2-Club dollars passed around today.) Wanda won #14 with par. With a tie on 15 & 16, the match went to Barton/Roberts.....3 up with 2 to play. It was a tough match, and easy to see why Hudson/Zimmerman won their bracket. They both played very well and gave Barton/Roberts a very tough match. They enjoyed the day with their friendly competitors!!!

Barton/Roberts struggled to a 1 up win over Jacobson/Gilliland...on to the Finals

We started on Hole #8 B today at Kingswood. (We might have been the only women on a packed course). Linda sank
a 20 footer for par, with a pop, to win the hole and go 1 up. Betty & Wanda tied the next hole with pars. On Hole #10,
Wanda made a “looooonnnng” putt for birdie from the front edge of the green, then made par on #11 to go 3 up.
But, wait!!!! Sue makes par on #12, to win the hole, and Betty wins Holes #15 & 16 with bogeys with pops, to even the
match. Sue & Betty par #17 to go 1 up. Wanda made par with pop on #18 to even up match. Here comes Betty, again,
to win Hole #1 with bogey and pop, then Sue wins #2 with par, to go 2 up. Linda and Wanda par #3 to win the hole, and
par #5 with pops to win the hole. Match is even, again!! Hole # 6 won by Wanda & Linda to go 1 up going into the last
hole. All we needed to do was tie or win to win the match. Betty chipped close for a gimme par. Linda & Wanda
made pars, and had to watch Sue miss her birdie putt by 1/2 inch!! Thank goodness we didn’t have to go extra holes!!!
It was a very hot day and a very hot match! We enjoyed the friendly competition from two great competitiors.

Zimmerman/Hudson defeat Crabtree/Smith 3 & 2.

The semi-final match between Crabtree/Smith and Zimmerman/Hudson started early on a beautiful day. Myrlene scored early with a par on the first hole, which was promptly answered by Linda's par on two. The next hole to score belonged to Peggy, but Zimmerman/Hudson took holes eight and nine to pull ahead on the front nine. Linda Smith had a great 9 holes, though, scoring a 46 for the first nine. Holes 10 and 11 fell to the Zimmerman/Hudson team giving them a three hole lead going into the 12th hole. Dual pars for Crabtree/Smith got the game within two, where it stayed until hole number 16. There, Hudson's score of six, made on a four inch putt, took the match. Myrlene and Judy are still shaking their heads in wonder. On to the finals!

Consolation Champs -Barloon/Wolters

Barloon/Wolters squeaked by over Pyle/Wiersema in the finals for the consolation bracket of Match Play Madness. And yes it was the hottest day of the year so far! Barloon/Wolters were one up on the front nine, before Biddy Pyle birdied two holes in a row! It was back and forth for a while, but Barloon/Wolters came out on top, winning four straight holes. The match ended with them being four up and two holes left. It was an enjoyable match, but everyone was happy to be out of the heat!

Barloon/Wolters Over Riorden/Luzum

Barloon/Wolters barely squeaked by in the match over Luzum /Riorden with a 2 & 1 victory at Kingswood. The match was back and forth through the 15th hole. Barloon/ Wolters parred #16 putting them two up with two holes left. Barloon, Luzum , and Wolters were all on the green for the par 3 on #17. Riorden chipped on, made her putt, and got a par. They had to win it, not tie to stay in the match. Barloon and Wolters both missed birdie putts, giving them a par, also. Then came Darla Luzum! She sank her 20 foot putt for a birdie and kept them in the game! (AND collected for Two Club!). It looked like the match might go extra holes! Barloon/Wolters edged them out on number 18, though, giving them the match! Fierce competition and great camaraderie!

Smith/Crabtree Defeat Walker/DeLany 2 & 1

The team of Smith/Crabtree played Walker/DeLany on July 3rd at Scotsdale. Weather was nice, little muggy. The weather wasn't all that was muggy....the golf was a bit that way too. Scores were pretty high by all. We had a few pars among us, but not a birdie in sight! No soaring drives, no 50 foot putts sank! However, all was not lost, because we had a good time! Linda & Peggy edged out Patty and Nan, 2 up with one to play. The winners treated the near-winners to lunch in the clubhouse, and all enjoyed a cold beverage...or two!

Gilliland/Jacobson Win 1 Up on 18th

Trying to fit their match in between raindrops on the holiday weekend, the teams of Elaine Twyman/Lisa Vines and Betty Gilliland/Sue Jacobson managed to get on Kingswood on the afternoon of Monday, July 3rd.  They survived the heat and humidity and played an outstanding match ... and they also had to overcome the fact that it was carts on path!?!

The match went back and forth on the front side until things wound up all square through 10.  From 10 through 17, the competitors would make putt after crucial putt to remain square.  If you were the last person putting, then you were putting to tie the hole ... hole after hole!  And the player usually putting last was Lisa Vines ... sinking putt after putt to tie holes!!!  As a matter of fact, Lisa had her lowest score ever shooting a great 81!  But it all came down to the 18th on the putting green yet again.  Elaine putted first and yet again burned the edge of the hole.  She never had a putt drop all day but burned several edges!  Betty and Sue were next and decided Betty was ready so she went ahead and putted next.  It was a 15 to 20 foot sidehill, downhill putt.  Let's just say that if it had not gone in the hole, it probably would have rolled all the way off the green!  But it banged into the back of the cup and dropped for a par with a stroke.  Now it was up to Lisa ... putting last yet again ... and a putt to determine the outcome of the match.  It was the only putt she missed all day long ... and probably the hardest putt she had to make all day long.  Gilliland and Jacobson pulled out yet another win on the 18th.

Bottom line ... when Betty Gilliland says she does not want to go extra holes, she means it and will back it up with her play!!!

Zimmerman/Hudson 2 Up Over Fabits/Meadows

On June 25, Myrlene Zimmerman and Judy Hudson played against Marilyn Fabits and Jean Meadows.   Judy and Myrlene were ahead on the front but Marilyn and Jean picked up holes on the back to even the holes.   But Myrlene dropped a putt in from off the green to win 15 and Judy had a par on 17 to put them 2 up going into 18. Tough round  and Judy and Myrlene are learning to deal with the stress of standing over important putts.

Barton/Roberts Out Battled Lamar/Brashears

It was a beautiful summer morning as Stevie,Karen,Wanda and Linda teed off at Country Club. Linda sank a 20 foot putt to take the first hole. Wanda used her pop on the next hole to go 2 up. Karen pared 3 but Wanda and Linda got another pop and tied Karen's par, holding a 2 up lead. Karen had another par on 4 and she took the hole.  Now Stevie and Karen were only one down. Hole 5 was tied. Linda and Wanda took hole 6 with a bogie and another pop. Linda had a par on 7 to take another hole thus bringing her team to 3 up at the turn. The next two holes were tied. Wanda had a birdie on 12, they were now 4 up. Hole 13 was tied. Another pop on hole 14 lead to a 5 and 4 win for Linda and Wanda. Stevie and Karen didn't play their usual game. That combined with the pops Wanda and Linda got helped to move them to the next match. Hugs all around ended a beautiful day with great friends!

Luzum/Riorden Win 4 and 3

posted Jun 24, 2017, 5:15 AM by BV WGC   [ updated Jun 24, 2017, 5:15 AM by Sue Jacobson ]

The match began with Mary chipping in for a birdie on the first hole. The team of Luzum and Riorden were off to an early lead of two up after the first couple of holes but that soon disappeared in this hotly contested match. Dori and Vicki both seemed to struggle with their putting which helped Darla and Mary win more than a few holes. The match went back and forth but Darla and Mary seemed to ham and egg it better than Dori and Vicki and they took the match with a score of 4 up with 3 holes to go.

Gilliland and Dandy Duke It Out ...

posted Jun 20, 2017, 5:56 PM by Sue Jacobson   [ updated Jun 20, 2017, 7:25 PM ]

Betty Gilliland and Brenda Dandy led their respective Match Play teams in a clash for the ages on Kingswood on June 20th.  Brenda shot a 2 under par 69 while Betty had the round of a lifetime while shooting an 82 ... just one shot off her age!!!

Betty and partner Sue Jacobson had to overcome a fast start by the team of Brenda and Sassy Weber.  Brenda easily birdied the first 2 holes to immediately put her team 2 up.  Betty managed a par with a stroke on the third hole to soften the blows Brenda had dealt.  On the #1 handicap 5th hole, Betty had a par to bring the match back to even.  She said that she rarely pars #5!  (This would become a common theme!)  Betty stepped up on the #7 tee box and nailed her shot to the par 3 white flag "right up the gut." The ball just rolled up the green and somehow stopped a couple of inches away from the hole for a gimme 2!!!  We had no idea how it stayed out of the hole. It was such a pure shot.

On to #8 where Betty rolled her putted approach all the way from in front of the green to the blue pin at the very back of the green to within 6 inches. Another gimme par with a stroke!  On the par 3 hole number 10, Jacobson and Dandy tied the hole with birdies.  But Dandy and Weber made easy pars on holes 12 and 13 to bring the match back to all square.

Then the imposing par 5 14th hole brought yet another rare par for Betty.  Her third shot hit the rocks in the creek and bounded forward to the side of the green.  From there, she chipped up and sunk her 14 foot putt for another par (with a stroke to take the hole) ... on #14!  Again, Betty never pars #14!!!  But the 15th saw Sassy Weber easily take the hole with a great par.  Back to all square ... again!!!

Brenda Dandy took advantage of her length to get to the par 5 16th just off the green in regulation.  Betty hit yet another crucial putt from about 10 feet for a bogey 6 which, with her stroke, was a net par.  Now Brenda had to sink a 6 foot putt to tie the hole.  And Brenda did exactly that to keep the match all square going into the par 3 17th hole.  Sassy's ball wound up on the putting surface about 20 feet from the hole while Brenda's ball was in the sand trap to the left of the green.  Betty's shot to the 17th was sitting just off the front edge of the green and Sue's ball was sitting about 3 feet from the blue pin all the way at the back of the green.  When Sue dropped Betty off at the front of the green, she told her it would be a lot less stressful on her if Betty would just sink the putt. You guessed it ... BETTY SUNK THE SHOT for a 2 to win the hole!!!  Gilliland and Jacobson were now 1 up going to the 18th hole. And Betty did NOT want to go to extra holes!!!

Brenda Dandy hit a monster drive and a monster second shot to give her only a pitching wedge to the front pin position which she stuck to within 5 feet of the pin!  Betty was about 30 yards short of the green.  So she walked up while the rest of us drove the carts up to the side of the green.  As we came to a stop, we saw Betty's ball in the air.  Betty's ball came to rest within 12 inches of the hole in 4 shots! Sassy just missed a birdie putt but Brenda did not miss her putt giving her yet another birdie.  But Betty knocked in her 12 inch putt to give her another unbelievable par on a very difficult hole ... with a stroke to tie Brenda's birdie.  Match over ... Gilliland and Jacobson win 1 up!!!

Brenda Dandy and Betty Gilliland were "en fuego" (on fire) during the match.  They would sink pressure putt after pressure putt so casually.  But, in the end, the day belonged to Betty Gilliland who had the round of a lifetime!  Even Betty's opponents recognized what they had just witnessed and were so gracious in defeat being very happy for her.

As you can imagine, this was an intense match!?!  And really, no one lost this match.  There just weren't any more holes to play ...
