On a warm but thankfully cloudy July 6th on Kingswood, Wanda Barton matched Sue Jacobson stroke for stroke to win 3 and 2. Wanda only made one mistake all day long and it was on the first hole when she hit her drive out of bounds. Realizing that driving the ball out of bounds was a possibility under the circumstances, Wanda had prepared herself to move on mentally to the next hole and forget about it. And forget about it she did! Wanda hit her tee shot on the par 3 2nd hole to within 5 feet. She not only birdied the 2nd hole but also the 10th hole. At that point, Wanda was up 3 and Sue was searching for a way to get back in the match.
Then on the par 3 12th hole, Wanda stepped up to the tee box and knocked her tee shot to within 6 feet again! Sue managed to stay on the green but was about 25 feet from the hole. Knowing she was running out of holes, Sue struck a good putt which managed to find the bottom of the cup ... finally! Wanda missed her birdie putt and Sue was able to take her first hole since the 3rd hole. Sue also took the 13th to put her only 1 down going into the two holes on the back side where Wanda had her strokes.
As she had done all day, Wanda won the holes on which she had strokes and Sue found herself down 3 again with only 3 holes to play. Wanda and Sue went toe to toe down the 16th fairway. Sue had a decent birdie putt but missed it which tied Wanda for the hole and gave Wanda the match!
Sue said, "Wanda played brilliantly! Her iron play was masterful! It was a pleasure to watch her have such a great day!!! The match came down to the putting yet again and Wanda beat me on the greens." Wanda's comment ... "I survived!!!" Indeed she did and she will play the winner of the Sue Brack / Anne McClintock semi-final match for the WGC Match Play Championship!
