(Wish I Could) Hideaway

Background

"(Wish I Could) Hideaway" closes the A-side of the original Pendulum album, the sixth long-player of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Besides the regular guitar, drums, bass lineup, the soul ballad features Hammond organ played by John Fogerty. The song is based on John's feelings about Tom [Fogerty] leaving the band and how he wanted to reach out to explain things to him (John Fogerty, Fortunate Son, 2015).

Live versions

Creedence Clearwater never performed the song live in concert. Neither has John Fogerty done it during his solo years.

Critical reception

"Organ intro leads into a ponderous yet musical original which at times features John singing in a high register." -Roy Carr, The New Musical Express, December 1970.

"--the best song on the album, maybe Creedence's first song that really deals with love. The singing, arrangement and extra nice fade-out here all work perfectly." -Jon Landau, The Rolling Stone, February 4th, 1971.
