Personal History:

T’Val was born in the Earth year 2236 on the Vulcan Colony Psi Zeta VI: a harsh, barren world not dissimilar to the Vulcan homeworld, yet, very much a frontier planet as far as the Federation is concerned. The “Expeditionary Colony” consisted of only a dozen families. Her parents, Valin (retired Starfleet security) and T’Sol (planetary scientist) were a logical choice for founding a colony family, as they were able to provide research data and protection for the project.

Ultimately the colony was abandoned when T’Val was 15. “There is sentient indigenous life on this planet. We have no right to settle here,” is the only reason Valin or T’Sol gave for the abandonment of Psi Zeta VI. Federation documents regarding Psi Zeta VI are listed as “Classified” and available only to members of Starfleet high command.

T’Val did not have a mate chosen for her at the traditional age of 7. Her parents deemed it illogical to choose a mate from such a small pool of families, leaving the “… and prosper” part of the traditional Vulcan benediction up to their daughter when she came of age.

T'Val's family settled on Vulcan, where she spent the rest of her late childhood in very typical fashion for her species. . .until she came of age. Her decision to enroll in Starfleet, as opposed to the Vulcan ScienceAcademy, was not well received by her family. Valin and T’Sol did not want their only child to experience what Valin once witnessed a Starfleet security officer or, even worse, lose their only child to the dangers of space. However, T'Val plainly explained that her background made her an excellent candidate for commission in Starfleet. Her parents could not argue against their child's course of logic.

Cadet T’Val managed fairly well in Starfleet Academy (Class of '63), considering this was her first contact with non-Vulcans. She excelled in her studies, despite the revelries of her Orion roommate, Selandra Vossovi. At one point, the young Vulcan even “experimented” in human social traditions, including a brief date with Command Cadet Dylan McCaffrey. Upon learning of the Mozart effect, T'Val discovered human music to be “intellectually fulfilling," and also developed a professional admiration for Newton concluding, “If the Human species can produce a logical mind such as this, they certainly have potential.” Cadet T'Val graduated first in her class.

Her first assignment after graduation was Earth Outpost 4, as part of a cultural exchange program between Earth and Vulcan. She tersely refers to this experience as “Almost adequate”, as she was not well received by the Human personnel of the station. In fact, her commanding officer never even directly addressed her, and relayed his commands exclusively through her peers, “Ensign T’Val will be on sensors today… again.” That’s about all her duties consisted of: Scanning the Neutral Zone day in; day out.

In 2264, when she earned a promotion to Lieutenant and received a transfer to the USS Intrepid, she flourished in the all-Vulcan environment. She quickly became the ship’s Planetary Science specialist and gained a reputation for her well-honed sensor skills.

Captain Spiak, serving as commander of the Intrepid at that time, even noted the young officer’s abilities; personally recommending her for the position of First Officer on an “intriguing new mission the Federation is undertaking…’troubleshooting, humanitarian aid, critical transport and other duties Starfleet Command deems expedient’” Spiak noted the crew manifest contained no Vulcans, “It is only logical our species be represented in such an essential mission to the Federation”.

3 days after this conversation with Spiak, T’Val found herself en route to the USS Bretagne, where Commodore Wesley duly accepted Spiak’s recommendation.

Aboard the USS Bretagne:

T’Val served as First Officer and Chief Science Officer aboard the USS Bretagne, initially under Commodore Wesley, and then afterward under Commander Maxwell Harper.

During the USS Bretagne's first shakedown cruise, T'Val was assigned to discreetly supervise Commander Harper's Kobayashi Maru scenario, and write up his final evaluation. As a result, this contributed to a relationship between Harper and T'Val that could only be described as "personally distant." However, this slowly began to change as time went on.
