Personal History:
Katerina Van Tassel was born and raised in Eugene Oregon. Her father Bruce served in Starfleet, while Katerina's mother Caroline was a professor at the University of Oregon. Since Bruce was away in deep space for long periods of time, Caroline was primarily responsible for young Katie's upbringing.
Caroline was very protective of her only child, and didn't travel often. When Katerina's father would come home on leave, he would always bring his daughter some little gift from his travels, and try to make up for lost time with her. He often amazed his child with stories about the distant planets he visited.
When Katerina turned 18, her father took the family on a trip to Rigel II for a diplomatic conference, where Bruce and Caroline had previously spent their honeymoon. This was Katerina's first off-world trip, and she was immediately hooked.
While Caroline showed her daughter the sights of Rigel II and reminisced, Katie had quietly made the decision to join Starfleet. At the end of college, Katerina enrolled in Starfleet Academy just as she had planned--much to the dismay of her mother. Katerina simply had no desire to devote her time to languages and cultural studies on Earth; preferring instead the promise of adventure and romance in space.
Following Katerina's first 2 years at the Academy, her father became the captain of the USS Andromeda, a Constitution Class vessel. While Katerina had hoped to be assigned to her father's ship, she was assigned to the USS Defiant instead. A year later, Katerina was assigned to the USS Bretagne.
