1840年11月3日、ロンドン・リンネ学会の特別会員であったイギリスの昆虫学者フレデリック・ウィリアム・ホウプ（Frederick William Hope, 1797.1.3-1862.4.15）がミヤマクワガタ属の Lucanus serricollis として記載した。

タイプ標本はインド・アッサム地方採取。オスは未検。
「serricollis」はラテン語の属格で「鋸の丘の（serra＝鋸、collis＝丘）」の意。
1845年、フレデリック・ウィリアム・ホウプはミヤマクワガタ属フタマタクワガタ亜属の Lucanus (Hexarthrius) serricollis とした。
1852年12月22日、フランスの昆虫学者ルイ・ジェローム・ライヒェ（Louis Jérôme Reiche, 1799.12.20-1890.5.16）はフタマタクワガタ属とすると共にパリー種のシノニムとした。
