1 oz gin
1 oz Campari
1 oz sweet vermouth
half orange wheel
Combine liquids in cocktail shaker half-filled with ice.
Shake vigorously and strain into chilled cocktail glass; garnish with orange wheel.
This drink looks like a candy drink but taste it and you will know it is definitely not; Campari is a bitter Italian apertif and very unexpected. I like to take my first sip and then squeeze the orange wheel into the drink to take a little of the edge off. This is another drink from the 1920's (supposedly created for Count Cammillo Negroni) and is great before steaks. If you order this in a restaurant (assuming they even have Campari) you'll most likely get it on the rocks. I prefer it up, so if I'm in the mood for it when I go out to eat I look at the back of the bar and if I spot that red bottle of Campari I make sure to order a negroni up with an orange slice. Lots of places haven't heard of it, but since it's equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari it's easy to make.
