尊者阿迦曼遇虎記

"If everyone would stand perfectly still and not make

any movement, the cat wouldn't hurt anybody."

A news item may shed some light on the extraordinary story

in 尊者阿迦曼傳

當夜幕降臨時，他已經到了大森林的中間，突然地，兩隻 大老虎同時的吼聲撕裂了天空，一隻從前面趨近，一隻從背後。牠們愈靠近，吼聲就愈震耳欲聾，兩隻似乎都要把他飽餐一頓，然後一隻出現在他面前大約二米的小 徑上，一看後面，另外還有一隻在大約相同的距離之外，長老阿迦曼沒有選擇，只得靜靜地站立著， 確信這就是他的末日了。他不能說他不害怕，可能是他嚇得反而不覺得害怕了。他釘住在他所站的地面上，但是在這千鈞一髮的時刻，念住來拯救他了。把身體交付 給老虎時，他決定不放棄念住，他的心意從老虎身上撤出而念住於自己身上，成為專一，同時他知道老虎絕不能傷害他。在另一瞬間，他的心意完全地撤入禪思的基 礎內，保持了好幾個小時。當他再度潛出時，他發現自己站立如前，他的雨傘在一個肩膀上，他的缽吊掛交叉在另一邊，他的旅行燈籠仍在手上，但是蠟燭早已熄滅 了。他點亮了另一個蠟燭，但是看不到老虎了，森林一片寂靜。

長老阿迦曼非常詫異他仍然毫髮無損，沒有被老虎碰觸和傷害。

Dorfman, animal behaviorist, described the Christmas carnage as extraordinarily rare.

"Anything they perceive as a danger they're going to strike at," he said.

"That's their instinct. If everyone would stand perfectly still and not make any movement, the cat wouldn't hurt anybody."
