World War One Tank Statistics

Draft figures.

There were 781 days between the 15th September 1916 when tanks were first committed to action and 5th November 1918 when the last tank action took place.

Tanks were supposed to go into action on 98 of these days.

There were supposed to be 3587 individual tank actions (tank days).

D / 4th Battalion was in action on the most separate occasions, 29 days, with 320 individual tank days.

But both A / 1st and C / 3rd Battalions committed more tanks to action,

C / 3rd battalion having 355 tank days during its 23 days in action

A / 1st Battalion having 334 tank days in its 27 days in action

Notes

The total number of days is a little lower as tanks sometimes failed to get into action (i.e. 16 August 1917).

Each day when an individual tank was in action counts as a single tank day, even if the tank went into action more than once.

Only fighting tanks are included.
