I found an article with some troubleshooting steps that could help.

Step 1. Reboot your speaker or display
Disconnect the power cable from your speaker or display.
Reconnect power cable back into the speaker or display.
Step 2. Reboot router
Power off the router and power it back on. Note: Most routers just require that you unplug the power source and then plug it back in to reboot.

Amazon Echo: Music Is Suddenly Distorted (Why?) - Smart Home Point
Distorted audio from an Amazon Echo device can be caused by anything from Wi-Fi trouble to hardware failure.
The first thing you should do is a factory reset
followed by an update to make sure that your device is bug-free and up-to-date.
After that, check your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections to make sure there’s no network interference or bandwidth issues.
The last possible cause is hardware failure and for that you’ll need the warranty or a good return policy.
=====> Gelukkig hoefde ik niets te doen; de dag erop liep alles weer zonder probleem; onbegrepen stuk!?

If you encounter performance and quality issues when you play music on your Google Nest or Home speaker or display, try the following:
Your speaker or display is within 15 - 20 ft. (4.5 m - 6 m) of the router.
If your speaker or display is within 15 ft - 20 ft (4.5 m - 6 m) of the router, and music is still choppy when you play from your speaker or display, try one of the steps below. If music is still choppy or stutters, move to the next step.
Disconnect the power cable from your speaker or display.
Reconnect power cable back into the speaker or display.
Power off the router and power it back on. Note: Most routers just require that you unplug the power source and then plug it back in to reboot.
Chromecast Audio uses sounds to indicate user actions. Here's more on how you can customize playback sounds:
Whenever you start a cast session, Chromecast Audio will play a playful sound in order to indicate a connection was made and playback is about to start. You can also use this time to adjust the volume to your preferred levels before the music starts. Note: The time it takes before music playback actually starts depends on the app you're using for casting.
When changing the volume of your Chromecast Audio through the music app or your Google Home app, your Chromecast Audio will play a short sound confirming a volume change was done.
Android iPhone & iPad
Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast.
Open the Google Home app .
Tap and hold your device's tile.
At the top right corner of the screen, tap Settings Audio.
Turn off Playback sounds.
Chromecast Audio supports Full Dynamic range output. This provides premium and professional audio equipment such as Hi-Fi audio systems, AV receivers, and monitor style speakers with the highest quality sound output.
When connecting your Chromecast Audio to such sound systems using 3.5 mm or RCA analog cable, you can turn on Chromecast Audio’s Full Dynamic Range option:
Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast.
Open the Google Home app .
Tap and hold your device's tile.
At the top right corner of the screen, tap Settings Audio.
Turn on Full Dynamic range.
Note: Many common speaker systems such as desktop computer speakers, docking speakers, portable and Bluetooth speakers are not built to support such a Full Dynamic range, causing the volume level to be very loud and sound to be somewhat distorted. Avoid turning this setting on in those cases.
When Chromecast Audio is connected through an optical interface, it will always use Full Dynamic range. Setting Full Dynamic range to off won't have an effect as it will remain on.
