The station is owned by Pridelands Media LLC. The station is named after the cute lion cub leader of the Lion Guard Kion from The Lion Guard. The station also broadcast in Finnickville, NY (via a Translator) at 106.1 FM.

History

The station has always had the KION-FM call letters, it was one of the first stations in the area. Even though the station is east of the Mississippi River (it should use a "W" not a "K") is was grandfathered into the system. The station first signed on air in 1920 as "105.1 KION-FM News" as a news & info station. Then 2 years later is 105.1 KION-FM News & Hits" playing some news with top 40 music. The station stayed the same until 2006 when the station was bought by Kit Hawking Media. The station then switch formats to all hits branded as "Kit's Hits 105.1". In 2010 Kit Hawking Media's WPNN-FM (Kit Rock) was sold to Canterlot Media the be branded as "Pony News Network Southern Tier". In turn Kit Hawking Media got WKIT-FM from Canterlot Media and branded it as "105.1 Kit Rock". As with this they took the KION-FM off air and 1/2 year later was sold to Pride Lands Media. Pride Lands media did not much with it until 2014 when the Governor Jordan and Simba/Nala were meeting and Jordan suggested to name the station after Kion (Simba's new son) as since the call letters matched. KION-FM was then brought on air as "106.9 Kion's Country Hit's". This was also agreed as his daughter Kiara had a station in the town named after her (and then Kovu) WKNK-FM (Kiara & Kovu's Hits 101.2).

All this time the KION-TV call letters was always with the KION-FM call letters, but never used. Now in 2015, Pride Lands Media has started a new station that one became one of the 4 big news stations in the southern tier along with WKIT-TV & WTYD-TV & WDUR-TV.
