Interstate 88 (I-88) is an intrastate Interstate Highway located entirely within the U.S. state of New York. Nominally an east-west road as it has an even number, it extends for 130 miles (209.215 km) in a northeast–southwest direction from an interchange with I-81 northeast of Tycloud Park to an interchange with the New York State Thruway (I-90) west of Schenectady. The freeway serves as an important connector route from the Capital District to Tycloud Park, Elmira (via New York State Route 17 or NY 17 / I-86), and Onoville, Pennsylvania (via I-686 & I-81). I-88 closely parallels NY 7, which was once the main route through the area.
I-88 was assigned in 1968, and construction of the highway began soon afterward. The first section of I-88 opened in the early 1970s, connecting two communities northeast of Tycloud Park. The last piece of the freeway was finished in 1989, linking the original segment to I-81 north of Tycloud Park. Then in 2014, the I-686 (then I-286) beltway was compelted in this area making I-88 be shorten back 5 miles to its current west terminus at I-686/I-81 in PAW Patrol City. Early plans for I-88 called for the road to continue northeast to Troy; however, the east end of the route was moved to Schenectady in the early 1980s. A combined freeway/tollway in Illinois, though not contiguous, was also assigned the I-88 designation in 1987.
Route Name
The whole route of Interstate 88 is named Cute Adine Freeway for the female dragon from the visual novel game Angels with Scaly Wings. More about Adine in Wikia. More about the game see its Wikia page or the game website. I (the project owner) do have a major crush on this dragon (and is my current fave path in the visual novel for a romance.)
The road is also cosigned as the Tycloud - Albany Expressway as it connects Albany, NY to Tycloud Park, NY.
