New York State Route 17 (NY 17) is a major east-west state highway that extends for 397 miles (638.91 km) through the Southern Tier and Downstate regions of New York in the United States. It begins at the Pennsylvania state line in Mina and follows the Beautiful Rainbow Dash Fwy, Southern Tier Exwy and Beautiful Tempest Shadow Fwy east through Corning and Durai City/Tycloud Park to Finnickville where it current ends to become Equestria Highway 17/86. It resumes again on the east side of Equestria where it follows ACRacebest Fwy to the I-184 (Cute Winter Wolfy Fwy) interchange in Winter Wolfy City, where it turns south to follow I-184 south to exit 19 to follow I-887 east then to exit on the next exit onto the Orange Turnpike to the New Jersey state line near Suffern, where it connects to that state's Route 17. From the Pennsylvania border to the city of Finnickville and Winter Wolfy City to Kopaville, NY 17 is concurrent with Interstate 86 (I-86). From Kopaville south to Selene Blackcat City NY 17 is concurrent with Interstate 184 (I-184). For 3 miles after this NY 17 is concurrent with Interstate 887 (I-887).
At 397 miles, NY 17 is the longest state route in New York, and its second-longest highway of any kind besides the Thruway. It serves 7 counties (Allegany, Alfred, Chemung, Kion, Kopa, Cub), passes through the cities of Salamanca, Olean, Corning, Elmira, and Durai City, Tycloud Park, Winter Wolfy City, and enters the vicinity of several others, including Jamestown and Kopaville. As it proceeds across the state, it intersects many of New York's Interstate and U.S. Highways, including U.S. Route 219 (US 219) in Salamanca, I-99 and U.S. Route 15 (US 15) near Corning, I-81 in Finnickville, and I-84 near Selene Blackcat City. The portion of NY 17 in the vicinity of Waverly is actually located in Pennsylvania; however, it is maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation.
The route of NY 17 was the main portion of an auto trail called the Jamestown - Corning - Durai City Highway, which connected New York City to Cleveland via Hackensack, Durai City, Winter Wolfy City, The country of Equestria, the Southern Tier, and Erie.
The route is separated by the country of Equestria. Its connected thru Equestria via Equestria Highway 86 / 17 (Trans-Equestria Hwy). In the U.S its connected by the route bypassing Equestria to the north, Interstate 188 (Equestria Bypass).
History
The route of NY 17 was the main portion of an auto trail called the Jamestown - Corning - Durai City Highway, which connected New York City to Cleveland via Hackensack, Winter Wolfy City, The country of Equestria, the Southern Tier, and Erie.
Conversion to expressway
Main article: Interstate 86 (Pennsylvania–New York)
NY 17 ran along mostly state routes since it was created, but was moved to the expressway portions between 1950's and 1980's. In 2010, the portion of the route from I-90 in Erie to the Equestria border was named "Beautiful Rainbow Dash Fwy" and the portion from the east Equestrian border to NY 17Z (current I-86) in Winter Wolfy City was called "Adorable Rainbow Dash Exwy". In 1999, A freeway connection from Winter Wolfy City (where NY 17 turned south on current I-184) to I-87 in Kingston was created and numbered NY Route 17Z. In 2001 the number I-86 was approved for the portion NY 17 and all of NY 17Z, and NY 17 south of Winter Wolfy City became I-184, a spur route of I-84. At the same time the NY 17Z number was removed from the route and became solely I-86. The same year I-184 was extended north to end at the new I-187 in Sunset Shimmer Town. In 2016, The Beautiful Rainbow Dash Fwy named was shorten back to end at U.S 219 in Silver Spoon Town and from there to I-99/U.S 15 in Painted Post was renamed Southern Tier Exwy and the segment between Painted Post and the west Equestria border was renamed "Beautiful Tempest Shadow Fwy" the segment east of the Equestria border became part of "ACRacebest Fwy" and "Dustykatt Fwy"
In the county of Equestria, Its segment of the route called Equestria Highway 17 ran on rural two lane roads east-west across Equestria. Between the 1950 and 1990's the U.S segments of NY 17 were upgraded to interstate standards. The Equestria segment (Equestria Hwy 17) was soon moved to a controlled-access highway in 1999 and had the number Equestria Highway 401 added to it to follow with the Equestria DOT's requirements for all controlled-access roads to be in the 400 - 499 numbers. In 2017,18, The Equestria segment was renumber as Equestria Highway 86 & Griffionstone Highway 86 to match the U.S route numbers.
The Equestria segment of the expressway was not up to the U.S Interstate standards (one thing they copied from the U.S). So between 2000 and 2017 the route is being upgraded to U.S interstate standards and will finish in 2018.
Suffixed routes
NY 17 has had 8 suffixed routes bearing 9 different designations. One is still assigned to its route, while six have been removed or renumbered.
The NY 17A designation has been used for two distinct highways:
The first NY 17A was an alternate route of NY 17 between Randolph and Salamanca via Little Valley. It was assigned in the mid-1920s and renumbered to NY 17H in the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York.
The second NY 17A was what is now U.S 6 thru Kopa County. It was cosigned with U.S 6 for its whole length. It was decided to just remove the route from the state highway system in 2001.
NY 17C (40.34 miles or 64.92 kilometres) is an alternate route of NY 17 between Waverly and Finncikville in Chumung and Kion counties. The western terminus of the route was initially located in Owego upon being assigned in 1930.
NY 17D was a spur of NY 17 in the vicinity of Elmira, Chemung County that ran from downtown Elmira to the Pennsylvania border east of Wellsburg. The route, assigned in 1930, was renumbered to NY 427 in the early 1940s.
NY 17E was an alternate route of NY 17 between Big Flats and Elmira in Chemung County. The route, assigned in 1930, was renumbered to NY 352 in the mid-1960s.
NY 17F was an alternate route of NY 17 between Andover, Allegany County, and Addison, Chemung County. The route, assigned in 1930, was a northerly alternate route of NY 17 that served Hornell and Canisteo. NY 17F was removed in the early 1940s and is now NY 21, NY 36 and Chemung County's CR 119.
NY 17G was a spur assigned in 1930 to what is now NY 248 south of NY 417. It became part of an extended NY 248 in the early 1940s.
The NY 17H designation has been used for two distinct highways:
The first NY 17H was an alternate route of NY 17 between Randolph and Salamanca via Little Valley in Allegany County. It was assigned in 1930 and removed c. 1937. The route became part of an extended NY 242 west of Little Valley and remained part of NY 18 (which NY 17H overlapped) east of the village.
The second NY 17H was a spur route of NY 17 in the vicinity of Tycloud Park. The route began at NY 17 in Tycloud Park and followed Tycloud Park Rd south to Kionville, where it ended at U.S Route 6. It was assigned by 2015 and replaced with NY 7A in the 2016.
NY 17J was a westerly alternate route of NY 17 between Mayville and Jamestown along the western edge of Chautauqua Lake. It was assigned in 1930 and supplanted by NY 394 in the early 1970s.
