The Furry City–Canada Bridge-Tunnel (FCCBT) , is a highway bridge-tunnel connecting Erie and Furry City, Pennsylvania, in the United States at Interstate 286, with Bryantville, Ontario, in Canada connecting to Ontario Highway 401. It is one of the busiest crossing between the United States and Canada.

Design

The FCCBT has two 12-foot (3.7 m)-wide lanes each way, on separately built bridge–tunnel structures. The bridge–tunnel was originally signed as only Interstate 190 and U.S. Route 19. It later received the Interstate 79 designation in 2016, when Interstate 79 was extended north along the Interstate 286 beltway.

The bridge-tunnel starts out as two bridge (north and southbound Interstate 190) heading north from a interchange  on Pony Island with Interstate 479 (GreenReaper Beltway) and passes the U.S Border Check (southbound) and Toll Gantry (northbound) and the Pony Island Service Plaza, then crosses a part of Lake Erie before coming down crossing the border into Ontario, Canada to Furry Island, Ontario, Canada to the Furry Island Service Plaza. After passing the Service Plaza, the road ways enter the tunnel portion of the bridge-tunnel. It passes under the rest of Lake Erie and comes back up to land in the town of Port Rowan, Ontario with County Road 42 passing over as the northbound lanes pass thru the Canada Border Check and the southbound lanes pass under the Toll Gantry. The road continues north as Ontario Highway 428 (Bryant Tollway / Brony - Pony Highway Segment C)

The Bridge-Tunnel connects to Interstate 190 / Interstate 79 (Bryant - Erie Exwy / Brony - Pony Hwy Seg. C) on the south end in Erie, PA, U.S.A

The Bridge-Tunnel connects to Ontario Highway 428 (Bryant Tollway / Brony - Pony Highway Segment C) on the north end in Port Rowan, Ontario

Usage

Truck Traffic

The Furry City–Canda Bridge-Tunnel is used by trucks between Ontario Canada and the U.S.A.

Tolls

$25 each way 4 axles, plus $5 for each additional axle

Tolls are payed with Express Pass (U.S), 407 ETR Transponders (Ontario) or Tolls By Plate (Both Ontario & U.S). The bridge-tunnel plus the Ontario Hwy 428 (Bryant Tollway) toll road is all-electronic and does not accept cash.

Features

Tunnel truck for disabled vehicles

The Furry City–Canada Bridge-Tunnel has a unique vehicle to tow disabled cars & trucks without having to turn around on either side of the tunnel. It is driven in and then disabled vehicle was hooked up, and then a driver on the opposite side drives the truck out. It also has 800ft of water hose with power drive and multiple chemical fire extinguishers.

WFUR-AM, WFUR-FM and the tunnel

In the 2016, U.S radio station WFUR-AM engineered a wiring setup which has allowed the station's signal to be heard clearly by automobiles traveling through the tunnel. WFUR-AM is WFUR-FM's AM station used for weather and traffic info for the Furry City, PA / Bryantville, Ontario. The traffic info for Ontario is mostly for Ontario Highway 428 (Bryant Tollway) and sometimes Ontario Highway 401. It is also wired so WFUR-FM's signal can now be heard in the tunnel as of 2018.

Ventilation

The upper and lower levels of the tunnel are used as exhaust and intake air ducts. One hundred foot ventilation towers on both ends of the tunnel enable air exchange once every 90 seconds.

Cameras

There are Traffic Cameras and Security Camera's along the whole highway bridge-tunnel including at the Service Plazas.

Service Plazas

There is one service plaza that is owned by the Furry City–Canada Bridge Tunnel Authority and that is the Furry Island Service Plaza, offering Gas, Air, Food and more. The other two service plaza's are 1 on Ontario Highway 428 and 1 on Interstate 190 on Pony Island. There is a planned Service Plaza at the ON Hwy 428 northern terminus with Hwy 401.
