JOHN P BLACK (parents JAMES PALMER BLACK and JOAN ADAMS),

b. 09 August 1845 St Cuthberts, Edinbugh, Midlothian, Scotland;

d. 14 November 1944, 'Burnside', Atawhai, Nelson.

Married ELIZA MARIA FOWLER (parent WILLIAM LONGNEY FOWLER and ELIZA THOMAS) on the 9 November 1879 in Trafalger Street, Nelson. They married at the home of Ellen Johns (nee Fowler, ELIZA's aunt) by Rev A I Hamilton.

b. 16 March 1852 in Woodchester, Rodborough, Gloucester, England,

d. 11 August 1934 in Nelson, 'Burnside'.

JOHN P BLACK:

Marriage Certificate: Ref - 1879/3057. JOHN was 34 and a Draper when they were married, ELIZA was 26 years old. The marriage was witnessed by Clara E. Fowler who lived in Christchurch.

Death Certificate: Ref - 1944/4408. Occupation: Draper. Cause of Death: Heart Block, Myocardial Degeneration, Coronary Scholerosis. Ages of children when he died: M 64, 58, 56, 52, F - 60. His fathers profession was listed as a Draper. He was 99 when he died, and had lived in New Zealand for 94 years. He was 34 when he married ELIZA.

He is buried at the Whakapuaka Cemetery (Nelson), Block 09, Plot #1 021 (reference WKNP09021_A). He was interred on the 17th November 1944. He is buried in the same grave as ELIZA.

Will: A Probate and Will are available from the Website Owner upon request. The motion for probate was brought by Alexander Thomson (Butcher) and Philip Moore (Solicitor) as they were the surviving exectutors. Probate was valued at £1879.12s.9d. His residance was given as 'Burnside' Atawhai, Nelson. All assets were to be turned into money and equally split between all his children. There were 4 Codicil's on the will. The first change was that he left his lathe and all his carpentering and gardening tools to his son Leonard Stanley Black. He specifically then named: Harold Bain Black, Leonard Stanley Black, Robert Paterson Black and Henry Campbell Black as being the beneficiaries of his will as John Leonard Black and Beatrice Wood were better provided for than his four sons. The second codicil was to change executors as James Baxter had died. In the third codicile Robert Black was no longer an Executor. The fourth codicile was that Philip Moore was added as an executor.

JOHN had been a first day pupil of the Nelson Boys' college when it opened in 1856.

ELIZA MARIA FOWLER:

Birth: Birth Certificate obtained from England. Fathers occupation was: Farmer.

Christened: 20 June 1852, Woodchester, Gloucester, England.

Death Certificate: Ref - 1934/2765. Cause of Death: Influenza, chronic valvular disease of the heart. Ages of children when she died: M - 53, 47, 45, 43, 41, F - 49. She was 82 when she died. Her death certificate indicates that she was born in Coaley and had been in New Zealand for 78 years.

She was interred in the same plot on the 14th of August 1934 (reference WKNP09021).

Will: A Probate and Will are available from the Website Owner upon request. John Black and Robert Black were the affidavit to lead grant of Probate. The amount payable on probate was £2978.3.6. Her home address was given as 'Burnside' Atawhai. She bequeaths all her real and personal propety to her husband to occupy use and enjoy the same and to receive the rents profits and income thereof during his life. Upon his death the money should be split equally between all living children.

"In the passing of Mrs Eliza Maria Black, wife of Mr John Black of Atawhai, Wakapuaka, Nelson and district has lost a resident who was held in very high esteem by all. Although of an unassuming disposition, the late Mrs Black was an active worker in any good cause. At the age of five years, with her father and mother, she left her birthplace, Leondard Stanley in Gloucestershire, England, and arrived at Nelson towards the end of 1857, where she remained uantil her death last week. Her marriage to Mr Black took place on 10 November, 1879, and for many years Mr and Mrs Black were residents in the city. There was a family of five boys and two girls, one daughter predeceasing her mother by several years."

Obituary 13 August 1934: BLACK: At her residence, 'Burnside' Atawhai, Nelson, on 11th August, 1934, Eliza Maria, dearly beloved wife of John Black, in her 83rd year."

Headstone Transcription: "In loving memory of ELIZA MARIA BLACK died 11th August 1934 aged 83. Also her husband JOHN BLACK died 14th November 1944 agedd 99."

ELIZA MARIA FOWLER immigrated to New Zealand in 1857 when she was 5 years old.

i John Fowler BLACK, b. 3 September 1880, Nelson (Ref 1880/2707), d. 13 September 1958, Tauranga (Ref 1958/3946). Occupation: Carpenter. Buried Tauranga Cemetery Plot 4, Section 21, aged 78. Married IVY NORAH THERESA O'DRISCOLL, 1920 (Ref - 1920/2637). He lived at Wakapuaka and then at Mt Maunganui.

ii James Fowler BLACK, b. 3 September 1880, Nelson (Ref 1880/2707), d. 4 September 1880, Nelson. Cemetery records indicate that he was 36 when he died, but it is more likely that he was 36 hours old.

iii Myra Gertrude BLACK, b. 10 February 1883, Nelson (Ref - 1883/1538), d. 11 June 1925, Nelson (Ref - 1925/1509). Buried in Whakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson (WKNP09020), Cemetery Block 09, Plot #1 020, date of Interment, 13 June 1925.

Headstone Transcription: "In affectionate remembrance of MYRA GERTRUDE BLACK, who departed this life June 11th 1925, aged 43. "Until the day dawns."" Note: Same grave site as her parents.

iv BEATRICE BLACK, b. 17 November 1884, Nelson, d. 16 September 1946, Nelson. Married ERNEST ALFRED WOOD on the 6 February 1907, Nelson. Also known as Trixie.

v HAROLD BAYNE 'BART' BLACK, b. 2 November 1886, Nelson (Ref - 1887/549), d. 6 May 1960, Ashburton (Ref 1960/1302). Married AIMEE MONTAGUE EDSER on 1 January 1916 in Auckland (Ref 1916/1085). He was a well-known swiming coach and builder.

vi LEONARD STANLEY BLACK, b. 29 April 1888, Nelson (Ref - 1888/1644), d. 4 May 1965, Nelson (Ref - 1965/2432). Married MARGARET BOYD MCLAREN in 1913, Nelson (Ref - 1913/7626). He was on the staff of the Ngawhatu Psychiatric Hospital.

vii HENRY CAMPBELL BLACK, b. 3 October 1890, Nelson (Ref - 1890/3788), d. 27 January 1944, Whangamoa, Nelson (Ref 1944/705). Married ANNIE BERESFORD on 13 December 1916 in Whitmore, Newcastle-Under-Lynne, England. He was killed during a tree felling operation after a bush fire.

viii ROBERT PATERSON BLACK, b. 15 May 1892, Nelson (Ref - 1892/1614), d. 4 December 1972, Palmerston North (Ref - 1972/1614). Date of Interment 6 December 1972. Occupation: Public Servant. Buried in Kelvin Grove Cemetery, Block 1, Plot 97. Married MISS DOOBIE. He held a high position in the telegraph branch of the Post Office.
