"Wiliam (Olver) had married Mary Slade. and their first child, of eleven,
was born in 1780........she (Mary Slade, presumably) was closely related to
Jacob Slade, who was the godfather or guardian of Edward Slade Varcoe, to
whom he left all of his estate, and she introduced the Christian name Jacob
into the family which, by coincidence, lasted exactly 200 years. The first
Jacob (Olver) was born in 1783 and the last was buried in 1983.
Edward Slade Varcoe was the natural son of the first Lord Camelford, one of
the Pitts of Boconnoc, who had purchased the Manor of Brannel when it was
sold by the Tanners. Lord Camelford was the patron of William Cookworthy in
developing the China Clay industry, and valuable clay leases came to Edward
by way of his guardian, Jacob, to whom they had been entrusted."
