HENRY BURROWS

Marriage Certificate: HENRY and ELIZABETH were both of full age when they married in the Parish Church in the Parish of St Mary in the County Town of Nottingham. HENRY was a Brewer and a Groom living in Kegworth, Leicester. ELIZABETH was living in Water Lane. Both of their fathers (according to the certificate) appear to be dead at the time of the wedding. JOHN BURROWS was a labourer whilst JOSEPH NEAL was a Cordwainer. The marriage was witnesssed by John Neal and Martha Neal.

Death Certificate: Ref: 1916/3455. Henry had been a bootmaker and was 82 years old when he died. The cause of death was Cancer of the Stomach and exhaustion. The names of his parents were unknown. He was born in Leicester, England, and it was unknown how long he had been in New Zealand. He had married Elizabeth Neil (note the different spelling) in Nottingham, England when he was 21 years old. He was a widow when he died. His childrens ages when he died were: M - 60, 55, 53, 49, 44, 43, 36, F- 50, 48, 46, 41, 39 years old.

Buried in the Southern Cemetery in Dunedin, Blockk 14P, Plot 24A. Elizabeth is buried in the same plot.

ELIZABETH NEAL

Death Certificate: Ref: 1905/543. Elizabeth was 70 years old when she died of cancer of the uterus. Her parents names were not known. She was born in Nottingham, England, and had been in New Zealand for 45 years. She was married to Henry in Nottingham, England, and was 19 years old when she married. Her childrens ages when she died were: M - 50, 45, 42, 37, 32, 30, 25, F - 39, 35, 33, 29, 26.

Children of HENRY BURROWS and ELIZABETH NEAL are:

i WILLIAM HENRY BURROWS, b. 2 January 1854 in Nottingham, England, d. 31 Mary 1925 (Ref: 1925/794), Mental Hospital, Seacliff. He died aged 70 of senile decay. His fathers occupation was a bootmaker. He had been in New Zealand around 65 years, and had married Lavinia Smith in Arrowtown. She was 17 when they married (he was 28). They had 5 daughters. His birth certificate indicates that he was illigitimate. He was born about 5 years before his mother married Henry. No record of his father on his certificate.

ii GEORGE BURROWS, b. 19 October 1873 in Dunedin; d. 21 August 1964 in the Public Hospital, Ranfurly. Married ANGELINA GRIGG on 24 June 1900 in Brunnerton, New Zealand.

iii MARTHA BURROWS, b. 8 February 1878 in Bannockburn (Ref: Registration Number 1878003407). Elizabeths maiden name is given as 'Niel'. Both Elizabeth and Henry were aged 43 at the time of her birth (giving them a birth year of 1835). Elizabeth born in Nottingham and Henry born in Leicestershire. Note: A wedding between Mattie Burrows and Mr George Washington Boecking in 1902 is documented in the Otago Witness (10/9/1902).

iv ALICE BURROWS, b. 9 September 1875 in Bannockburn (Ref: Registration Number 1875001260).

v SON, b. 23 September 1881 in Arrow Lake County (no name recorded) (Ref: Registration Number 1881015618). Both Elizabeth and Henry were recorded as being 46 at the time (giving them a birth year of 1835). Henry's place of birth is 'Suttow, Leciestershire'. Elizabeths maiden name is given as 'Nealan'.

ELIZABETH and HENRY left for New Zealand with their son on the 9th February 1860, arriving Lyttelton on the 9th May 1860. They sailed on the Gananoque.
