2013 Assessment of the Interactive Focus
Outcomes for all Interactive Design Courses:
We need to provide more formalized instruction across all of our courses in UX and Design, That is not to say that we do not currently integrate those onto our design thinking. We really just need to formalize it and, at the same time, strengthen it in these areas.
- UX: there is an industry wide increased focus on this and students need evidence in their portfolios of its integration into their projects.
- Gridded Design and working with type: The Illustration based students are getting this for the first time in Interactive I. We are going change the program plan and have them take 2 Graphic Design courses prior to this to help prepare them better. It will always need to be reinforced here though.
- Visual Hierarchy: this is an issue we are working to improve throughout our entire program.
For the Interactive Thesis process that outlines a curriculum that I an proposing we all integrate into all Interactive courses.
For the KCDM Flash Framework, which contains tools for formalizing the UX Planning and Design Process.
Suggested Attendance and Assignment Due Date Policy
• Students perform better when they attend class and meet the iterative deadlines.
• Kendall is suffering from "grade inflation" and the new administration will be looking for us to correct that. (right half of Kendall students are graduating with a 3.5 or higher)
A strict attendance and assignment completion policy can address both of these challenges. Below is a new policy that I tried last semester. Attendance improved, project lateness decreased and grades went lower as a result of them.
Attendance
Attendance: For every 3 absences your final course grade will be lowered by 1 (such as.. a 'B' becomes a 'C'). Being late, will cost you a -1/3 adjustment. Excused absences include illness, family issues that are beyond your control, natural disasters and alien invasions.
Grading Criteria
Unless noted otherwise, all projects are due at the beginning of class on the dates listed in the calendar.
- Each deliverable not turned in will result in the lowering of your final grade by 2/3 (such as.. a B+ becomes a B-).
- Late submission will result in a 1/3 grade lowering (such as.. a B+becomes a B).
- Not having materials ready for reviews will result in a 1/3 grade lowering (such as.. a B+becomes a B).
- Failure to finish your project will result in an F. That grade can be changed once the project is completed even if you are no longer enrolled at Kendall.
