September Happenings!

It's been a busy September so far for the new 6th Class! There's been hand washing and there's been sanitising but there's also been lots of learning and lots of fun! More to come of course!

Theme 1: TEAMWORK!

To kickstart the year, we explored the theme of Teamwork in 6th Class. After months of working on our own, it was good to explore this theme together and working within our pods.

The Cheetahs, The Mangoes, The Caitíns and The Airpods are working very well! Take a look at our pictures to see for yourself!

Can you see what word The Airpods are making?

Like their name, The Cheetahs worked fast on this STEM activity!

The Caitíns working together as a team!

It finally worked for The Mangoes!

Co -operative & Colloborative Teamwork:

6th class were busy making a Roman Numeral Number Line, everyone adding to it individually but collectively making a most impressive Roman Numeral display.

6th Class No-Hands Cup Stacking Challenge

MORE TEAMWORK:

Things got a little trickier on week 2 when 6th Class had to complete this task : No Hands Cup Stacking Pyramid! Look at the concentrating faces!

SPHE: Communicating without talking!

Part of the SPHE lesson on Communication involved each member of the pod using one piece of paper each cut from a bigger A4 sheet which they had to re-assemble.

The Mangoes are nearly there!

The Caitins are working well!

The Cheetahs are so close!

One half of the Airpods are finding it tricky!

But the other half have cracked it!!!

SEPTEMBER THEME 2:

THE GREAT FAMINE (AN GORTA MÓR)

6th class have explored one of the most important events in Irish history. The Great Famine has been explored in History and Literacy and been integrated with Geography, Science, Art, Drama and even PE.

6th Class wrote some fantastic WOW word stories and recounts on the topic and really seemed to be able to put themselves in the shoes of the people we studied during out Famine exploration.

Potato Prints in Art

6th Class came up with some very impressive potato print ideas and created so many different but amazing paintings with their potatoes such as watermelons, yachts, turtles, shamrocks, owls and much much more! Take a look and see!

Science Experiments with potatoes :

6th Class have had a busy few weeks of science experiments using potatoes! We've demonstrated osmosis, we've done a magic trick with potatoes, we've compared different means in which potatoes will show mould and we've tested for starch!

Testing for Starch:

Children brought in their own food to test for starch as well as other items supplied.

PLEASE NOTE AN EMPTY BOTTLE OF IODINE TINCTURE CONTAINING ONLY A DROPLET OF IODINE WAS USED AND WAS DILUTED WITH 20 DROPS OF WATER.
