Really? Checking From Behind?

A tragic story emerged on the 19/03/14 where the Toronto Maple Leafs were taking on the Tampa Bay Lightning and just at the end of the period, Paul Ranger a defenseman from Toronto got checked/pushed from behind making his head hit straight into the boards. It took several minutes to get him onto a stretcher and leave the game. Currently today, he is at the hospital. Heres my question to the player who hit him, their were 4 seconds left in the period, no point of checking him, just leave him. It was a scary experience just watching it live and he gets banged into the boards and lays down on the ice like he just died. Here are my thoughts overall. I think he has an upper body or neck injury because they did put a neck brace when he was on the stretcher and now apparently he is out of hospital after an assessment, maybe its a critical injury, or its something small. When I get more information, i will write another blog for it.
