06. Three material

This is a three material art project. The three materials are ink, graphite, and charcoal. I had to make it roughly 1/3 of each in the drawing. I decided to use the most charcoal because of its dark, rich color. Additionally, I used ink wash to create the waterfall effect. Graphite was used in the trees on the sides, ink was used on the man-made features and charcoal was used on the rock face. To start this project, I had to figure out what picture I wanted to use. This had to be a picture I had taken. After choosing, I planned it out, thinking of which materials to use for which elements of the drawing. Then I worked on the piece, doing graphite first, charcoal second and ink and ink wash last.

I chose this picture for a couple of reasons. First, I thought it was very cool. It reminds me of Quebec and is a very nice picture to me. I also thought that it would be good regarding the materials I had to use. I thought that it would be unique to create a piece with ink wash, and what better way to do that than with a waterfall. I saw the rock section as being perfect for charcoal as well. I'm really glad that I chose this picture for the project.

Overall I am very happy with this piece. I think it is one of my best pieces of the year, and it is also one of my favorite pieces. I really liked using three materials instead of just one. I felt like it added a lot to the final product. If I could go back and do it again, I might choose to be more careful with the ink wash, and I would redo the building that is outlined in ink because it is a little crooked. Also I would've liked to find a way to add a little more detail to the rock face of the right side of the piece. All in all, I think that this piece turned out very well.
