My overall experience of 3D Design could be characterized in a few ways. At certain times this semester, 3D design has been stressful. I sometimes struggle with time management and it showed in my ability to get projects done. Although I never missed a deadline this semester, I sometimes didn’t leave a lot of time in my busy schedule for adding more details to perfect my work. By the end of the semester, I believe I improved in this. Once sports came to an end, I had more time outside of class and I also put time aside in study hall to work on projects. I believe that this helped me improve as an artist. 3D design has also been rewarding. Every time that I finish a project I take a step back and think about all of the effort and time I put into it. Just looking over all of my projects right now is rewarding to me because I can see how I may have struggled at first but then improved and became a better artist. A final way that I would describe my experience in 3D design would be new and exciting. I got to explore a lot of new materials and techniques such as sculpey, wood carving, wood burning, and bust-making.
A process that I really enjoyed this semester was making the bust. I liked it so much because I had never done it before and the meticulousness of the process interested me. There are so many steps that must be taken in order for a grapefruit sized ball of clay to transform into a human looking head. I also enjoyed painting the features on. Another process that I liked was creating an armature and then plastering it for the inside out sculpture. Even though this process took a while, I liked going through it step by step and then seeing the final product. One process that I struggled with was making a wearable sculpture. This was a very open ended prompt and I had a hard time thinking of a design for my project. It was so hard because I hadn’t really designed headwear before so I didn’t know how to make it so that my materials would look good. Another process that was difficult for me was wood burning. This is because I had no experience with a wood burner, so my marks were often messy and inconsistent in tone. Despite these struggles, I think I moved passed them and they even helped me become a more well-rounded artist.
The products that I am most proud of are the hand project and the concentration project. I am proud of the hand project because I wanted to send a clear and powerful message about gun control and I think my final product vividly conveyed this message. I really like the added effect of the red pins because I think they stand out and draw the attention of the viewer while still not taking away from the hands. I am also very proud of the concentration projects. This is because I put a lot of work into them and I think they turned out very well. These projects show that I have learned and improved because my improvement as an artist can be seen from beginning to end. I believe my projects became more thoughtful, detailed and neat by the end compared to the ones at the beginning. Art relates to my life because I think of myself as a creative person who loves to express emotions and beliefs. Art allows me to express my opinions whether it’s that I believe in gun control or that I think the Burj Dubai is a very cool building. In terms of styles and materials that I used a lot, I’d have to say that the most frequent material I came across was sculpey. This is because it is such a versatile material that can be used for making anything you want really. I used it in a few of my projects and I really enjoyed working with it. Overall 3D Design has been a fun and challenging class that has helped me improve as an artist and as a person.
