Circle Project

This is my Circle Project drawing. This is a drawing of a spiral staircase that spirals into a circle at the bottom. The light blue/black part is the railing and the brown rectangles are squares. I interpret this as looking down a staircase, but other people see it as looking up a staircase. I also made a design on the left with the dark blue and light blue sharpie markers. I used acrylic paint, sharpie paint markers and graphite to make this final product. The reason I made my piece of art circular is because it was international dot day on the day I started this project.

I started this project by making a three thumb-nail sketches of some ideas I had. The idea of a spiral staircase was actually the first thing that came to my head when I was told I had to make some sort of circular artwork. After choosing to do the staircase I decided to sketch it out on canvas. After sketching out my idea with pencil I took yellow acrylic paint and painted over the circle as a base color. I was originally going to use all acrylic paint to create this staircase, but Mrs. Medsker gave me the idea of using sharpie paint markers. These still had the paint effect, but allowed for much better precision. Then I started drawing with the sharpies. I did the stairs first, and the railing afterwards. To finish it off I cut out the circle from the canvas, taped it on white drawing paper, signed it and then framed it.

The inspiration behind this drawing was a spiral staircase I took pictures of in providencetown in Cape Cod. The staircase was on a huge tower called providence tower. It was more of a square staircase so I took mine in a little bit of a different direction. If I could do it again I might get to the actual paint process faster so that I didn't have to rush. Also, I would've made sure my sharpie markers were working properly because a few of my markers leaked once or twice on the page which I had to draw over. Overall I am pretty happy with my final project.
