Inside out sculpture

This is my inside out sculpture. It is a volcano made out of plaster and I painted it with acrylic paint. In the inside of the sculpture is a "volcano resort." There are houses made of sculpey and a pool with lava in it instead of water. I made the body of the volcano out of aluminum foil and I had to use masking tape to keep it together. I chose to use aluminum foil because I thought it would serve as a good base and the plaster was a good material to keep it solid and serve as a place to paint. Some elements and principles that I used were form, color and shape.

A composition rule that I used was grouping. I used it in the way that I clustered the houses in the volcano. It adds to the project because it provides a focal point. There is also formal balance because the volcano's form is symmetrical. At first I was going to make a city inside the volcano but I decided against it and I wanted to make a resort type of thing. I also was going to use tissue paper to make the texture of the volcano but I changed and decided to use plaster and paint.

I've always wanted to visit the volcanoes of hawaii so I decided to make this project based on them because it was more of a light project. it relates to my life because I made a resort and I enjoy going on vacation. If I could go back, I would've made the plaster surface smoother so that the paint could go on easier. I also might have made more houses out of sculpey. Overall I am happy with my final product. The most challenging thing about this project was covering the plaster in paint completely because there were so many holes in it. I am proud of how I was able to create a unique and captivating project, I really like how the lava pool and houses came out. This project shows my strengths through the use of a new material in plasterboard. It shows my weaknesses because there are a few messy spots and uncovered spots on the volcano.
