Concentration

These are my concentration projects. My first concentration is a replica of the tallest building in the world, the Burj Dubai. It is made solely out of cardboard. The second concentration is a tiny house and it is also made out of cardboard. I made both of these by cutting up cardboard into various interesting geometric shapes and then gluing them together. I chose to make these because I am interested in architecture. A few elements that can be seen in my projects are Line, form and shape. A principle that can be seen is pattern. The first concentration is patterned specifically like the building in real life and it has a cool effect.

A composition rule that is used in my first project is formal balance. The pillars on the sides of the building are spaced out evenly so that it is well balanced. The second project includes informal balance because a part of the tiny house is abnormally shaped to give it the abstract look and feel. The project didn't evolve too much except in terms of materials. At first I wanted to build an armature and cover it with sculpey but I realized that this wouldn't be realistic due to size.

This artwork is meaningful to me because I have always been interested in architecture, ever since I was a little kid, so I thought it would be a fitting project for the end of the year. I wanted to make the tiny house and the burj khalifa because I thought it was an interesting contrast. The only things that bother me about my pieces are minor inconsistencies like hot glue bits or creased cardboard. I am most proud of how my first concentration turned out because it is very visually appeasing and I think it is a good interpretation of the real building. The thing that challenged me the most was cutting the pieces of cardboard so that they were proportional to each other. These projects show my strengths as an artist because I was able to use a simple material such as cardboard for these projects and they show my weaknesses because they could be a little neater.
