Paper Sculpture

This is my paper sculpture, my first project in 3D design. For this project I had to create a sculpture out of paper that represented a word that I came up with to describe my first semester of sophomore year. The word I chose was unpredictable, and I had to somehow make a sculpture that captured the feeling of unpredictability. I wanted to make something that I could have objects coming out of. These objects would be significant to my first semester. I was thinking a box originally but then I chose a hat because I thought it would be more interesting to make. I used texture by making the question mark pop out on the hat lid and all of the pieces of paper on the rim of the hat. I feel like this enhanced my project.

I used the composition rule of formal balance. I did by making the hat symmetrical and balanced. My project evolved in a few ways. First I was going to make a box but I then I changed my mind and made a hat. Also I was going to make things like a paper car, a hockey stick, a soccer ball etc. come out of the hat but then I decided to just make different paper designs come out of the hat in order to enforce the word unpredictable. Additionally, I made the top of the hat tip off of the rim to give the piece even more "unpredictability."

The meaning behind this project is obviously supposed to be the word unpredictable, but it goes beyond that. I made the paper designs coming out of the hat to symbolize that things came into my life unexpectedly this year. This is how this project relates to my life. This could be stronger if I could've made the hat more complex or visually pleasing but i'm ok with it right now. The most challenging part was having only one piece of paper to do this. I would've made the rim of the hat an exact circle too if I had the chance. I am proud of how well it conveys the message, I think it captures the word "unpredictable" well. This project shows my strengths as an artist because I had to use a single piece of paper which I had never done before. The most challenging part of this project was only using this single piece of paper. It shows my weaknesses because I could have prepared a little better and made it a little more detailed and precise.
