Beautiful Oops

This is my beautiful oops drawing. This piece of paper originally had three splotches of ink on it, and I had to draw something that built off of or included the ink splotches-- in other words I had to make the "oops" into a beautiful piece of art, hence the title. I could've taken this in any direction, but as I turned the paper around and looked a it from all angles I saw that two of the ink splotches were lined up pretty well (at an angle) which reminded me of wheels. The third splotch looked like what could be part of a door. I decided it would be a car going down a hill, due to the angled placement of the ink. As I drew I decided to add some color and pop to it so I drew an explosion in the background, with an interesting pattern of grass down below. The materials I used in this drawing were graphite and markers. I used graphite to lightly sketch out my ideas and then I used markers to complete the piece.

Some composition techniques that I used were informal balance and the rule of thirds. The upper two-thirds include the focal point of the car and the explosion. The bottom third includes grass and rocks-- not especially exciting but it creates a balance. There is informal balance here because the main objects of my piece aren't directly in the middle. There weren't too many changes in my project but there were a few revisions along the way. At first I had the drivers seat of the car open, but then I changed it to being covered by a window to make it more mysterious as to who's in the car. Also, the explosion was supposed to be a sun at first, but then I added more colors to it and I liked it. I kept adding colors until it looked more like an explosion, so that's what it became.

I saw a couple really cool race cars on TV recently which inspired me to make this a race car. I thought a flame design would make it seem intense and fierce. To me, the story is that there is some type of secret agent in the car getting away from some place that just blew up. This drawing could be interpreted in many different ways though. Another connection to my life that is made in this piece is that I am learning how to drive, so cars and the road are on my mind a lot as I get closer to being able to take my drivers test. If I were to revise this piece, I might use water colors to blend the explosion. I feel like it would look better than the jagged lines of the marker strokes overlapping.
